Over the last year and a half, countless films have had their release dates pushed back in the hopes that movie theaters could reopen and welcome eager movie fans back. More recently, Disney finally released two films, Jungle Cruise and Marvel’s Black Widow both in theaters as well as on Disney+ via Premier Access, after multiple delays.
The recent rise in COVID-19 cases due to the Delta variant may be raising some new concerns about the return to movie theaters, and we could be starting to see the impact on upcoming fall releases.
According to Deadline, Sony has confirmed that the Spider-Man villain spinoff sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage has delayed its opening date from September 24th to October 15th. This move may call into question the fate of the theatrical release of another upcoming Sony release, Hotel Transylvania 4, but no updated has been provided as of this writing.
This is the first time we’ve heard of a highly anticipated blockbuster film delaying its opening date in the past several months. With Spider-Man: No Way Home currently scheduled for a release date of December 17th, fans may start to question whether or not the film will arrive on time, or if we’ll start to revert back to films pushing back their theatrical release date.
Keep in mind, too, that we have yet to see a single trailer be released for No Way Home! We’ll keep a close watch on this film and additional blockbuster releases scheduled throughout 2021 and we will let you know if we hear of any additional delays.
