NEWS: Florida Leads U.S. in Number of New COVID-19 Cases

A lot of COVID-era safety measures — like mask mandates and enforced social distancing — have been disappearing over the last few months.

We’re not seeing these much anymore!

But now Florida is seeing a rise in COVID cases, especially among unvaccinated people.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Florida leads the U.S. in new COVID-19 cases, with about one in five newly reported U.S. cases coming from Florida. The Times reported that Florida saw “45,604 new COVID-19 infections over the seven-day period between July 9 and July 15. That’s an average of over 6,500 new infections every day.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ press secretary, Christina Pushaw, noted to the Tampa Bay Times that, “Governor DeSantis has ruled out COVID lockdowns and mask mandates. The key to Florida’s success has been protecting the most vulnerable, i.e. seniors and residents of long-term care facilities.” Though the Governor has ruled out mask mandates, Orange County’s Mayor Demings has recently recommended that masks be worn indoors once again with the rise in cases.

Disney face covering

Local and state health officials are encouraging Florida residents to get vaccinated in order to keep themselves safe and stop the rise in cases.  In Florida theme parks, unvaccinated guests are asked to wear face masks indoors, although the parks will not require guests to prove vaccination status.

Most health and safety signs like this are no longer up in Disney World.

  1. So why is WDW not instituting a vaccine requirement and vaccine card check. Unvaccinated guests should not be permitted to enter the parks.

What is Disney’s plan if Florida closes down due to the virus varient?

What recourse does ticket holders and resort guests have if things close in Florida?

    1. They can’t require a vaccine or ask for proof – it is against current FL law. SB-2006 legislation codifies the prohibition of COVID-19 vaccine passports. Governor DeSantis enacted this prohibition through an executive order in May, blocking any business or government entity from requiring proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

    2. Lets take a few deep breaths a calm down! Currently 60% of the population 18 and over is fully vaccinated. 80% of people over 65 are fully vaxed. Deaths and hospitalizations have increased at a much lower rate than reported cases. Now add in natural immunity from 34 million reported cases. This equals nearly 200 million Americans that are vaxed or likely have natural immunity. That is fairly close to herd immunity %. As we open up, cases will tick upwards. That should be expected. Unless you have been living under a rock, you should know Florida is the last state that will shutdown.
