While Disney has a lot of projects in development right now, the company is also looking to continue to expand its conservation efforts.

As more sustainable efforts are featured in the parks, like refillable shampoo bottles and paper straws, Disney has many new and ambitious goals all the way through 2030 to make a lasting impact on the environment.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Walt Disney Company Bob Chapek, “Disney has shown a strong commitment to the environment throughout its history and we’re excited to continue building on that legacy with new, ambitious environmental goals for 2030. These goals focus on key areas of our business where we believe we can have a significant, lasting impact and make a positive difference in protecting our planet.”

Some of the biggest ways Disney plans on doing this is by continuing to move forward to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions for their direct operations (Scope 1 and 2) by 2030. Disney plans on doing this by building more sustainable energy sources, investing in more efficient technologies and processes, and the replacement of high-carbon energy sources with lower carbon alternatives.

They will also balance any remaining emissions with verified reductions (or carbon credits) that will help improve land management, reforestation, and the protection and restoration of the world’s ecosystems.

Disney will also be working to produce or purchase 100% zero-carbon electricity by 2020 through sources like on-site generation and partnerships with local utilities. More investments in renewable energy generation will be made through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), Virtual PPAs, and unbundled Renewable Energy Credits (RECs). This clean electricity will help power the theme parks and resorts, Disney Stores, film stages, and more that Disney owns.

Part of Disney’s environmental sustainability goals includes achieving zero waste for landfills in the parks and resorts, operating with the Higg index, or maintaining other sustainable manufacturing certifications for lower impact products, and other measures by 2030.
