Review of Disney Dining Plan

We vacationed at WDW the week of March 25th 2013 and paid full price for the Disney Dining Plan. The kids enjoyed the character meals, but that was the only thing we liked about the meal plan. For breakfast, it's basically the same food wherever you eat (especially buffet style). There is not a good variety of choices for the kids and There is way too much food, in fact we didn't use up all of our counter service meals and were unable to get compensated for them. You get the refillable drink mugs with the dining plan, but still get a beverage with each meal...what a waste if you are dining at the resort.

Pros:

Character Meals

Cons:

Way too much food

BBQ Chicken Pizza - AMAZING!! This pizza was out of this world good. I was on the dining plan and used quick service credits, but I would have used table service credits or paid for it, it was that good. I got ranch on the side to dip the pizza in. I wish we had this restaurant around where I live!!

I got a brownie as my dessert and that was just okay, but the chocolate chip cookie my husband got was really good. He ordered the meatloaf sandwich and said it was also great.

Pros:

Great food, fast

Review of Kona Cafe Lunch/Dinner

The wait for this restaurant was probably the worst of the whole trip - close to an hour even though we arrived earlier than our reservation time. Aside from that, the meal was spectacular. The waitress was very nice and prompt. Below was what we ordered:

Lump Crab Cakes - SOOO good, especially with a squeeze of lime. We ordered these as an extra outside of dining plan, and it was totally worth it.

Coconut Almond Chicken - Very good! The dish is half salad, and half chicken, but the combination of the two is excellent. It has great flavor complexity and isn't too heavy.

Banana-chocolate Creme Brulee - Very good creme brulee, I really liked the flavor. I enjoyed this more than the creme brulee I ordered as Chefs de France.

Pros:

Food, service

Cons:

Wait time

We ate here a few times during our stay. Below are some of the items we ordered:

Chilli cheese fries - Pretty good actually, I should have asked for some ranch or sour cream to dip them in though.

Hot dog with coleslaw - The coleslaw was seriously some of the best I ever had! The hotdog was fine, nothing special.

Cucumber salad - Good but could have used a slight flavor boost.

Chocolate cake - Good everywhere in Disney in my opinion!

Pasta with Meatballs w/Breadstick - Pretty good actually, I really liked it and I'm picky about Italian food.

Baked chicken with mac and cheese and stuffing - Very good, all in all I was pretty happy with everything I ordered in this cafe.

Pros:

Good food, convenient

Review of Boma Flavors of Africa Dinner - Jambo House

I've always loved Boma, and usually I rave about the meat. Although the ribs were fantastic, and the beef also very good, I found the side dishes to be my favorite this visit. The two types of cous-cous I tried were both fantastic, as well as the pasta salad and the potato salad. Great food, always fresh.

The standout desserts were Zebra domes and peanut butter mousse.

Pros:

Side dishes, buffet

I have vacationed at WDW a total of 8 visits and this was the worst dining experience we have had there. At Art of Imaginations food court there are 5 separate lines you can get in to order your food. The problem is that each line has a different menu to order from. So if you, your spouse and children all want something different, you can potentially all be waiting in different lines to order your food. And if you have small children, you will wait in line for your food (which took 40 minutes) and then have to hop in a different line for your child's food because he/she wanted something on the other menu, and now your food is ice cold from waiting. My suggestion, totally avoid or order all from the same menu line!!

Pros:

Good food

Cons:

Unorganized

We booked the pirates league in the morning for our son and daughter and they both loved it! The cast members took their time with each child (about 25min) while they put on their makeup and costume to make them look like a genuine pirate and pirate princess!! I loved the whole experience and the reaction the kids got while walking around the park dressed like a pirate all day!

Pros:

The kids loved the experience!

Review of runDisney Events

My DD ran the Princess Half Marathon for the second year, and as was our previous experience, it was great fun! We stayed at a host hotel, which makes getting around so much easier. Yes, the expo was much more crowded and logistically more difficult to get to this year, but I guess we were lucky that we did not hit huge crowds in the early afternoon on Friday. We picked up our race bibs, T shirts and bags (we as parents did the 5K) and were out in about half an hour.

I am amazed when I read that participants are put off by the crowds. If you do research, you realize this is a very busy event. This year was not the day to be trying for personal bests anyway, it was warm and humid. Many folks train to do walk/run to prevent injury, and saying no one should be allowed to walk is not only impossible, it can be dangerous. Participants should use better race etiquette for sure. Though the numbers are huge, I doubt Disney will back off on the number of entrants.

This race is intended to be fun AND challenging, as the number of people in costumes demonstrates. Yes, as spectators we were shoved and cut in front of as we waited for her to run by, but that is what can happen in large crowds, we take it in stride and stand our ground. Being in the MK to see her run toward the castle is a truly neat experience.

The bottom line is that you must start early to get where you are going, enjoy the day and be proud of the work you have accomplished to be able to run the race, and bask in the wonderful WDW experience. We found ourselves laughing often, and making friends along the way as we stood for what seemed forever to see her pass. Patience is important.

The parks were not overly crowded for us, but we are seasoned WDW veterans and so know how to plan. She loved wearing her medal in the parks afterward, and congratulating fellow runners.

My DD is taking a break from running, but I would go with her again in a heart beat if she runs this race again.

Pros:

great fun - well organized event

Cons:

crowds!
