NEWS: Closing Date Announced for Big Thunder Mountain at Disneyland

Even Disneyland’s grand 70th Anniversary celebration can’t stop pesky refurbishments from happening at the park.

If you have a trip planned to visit Disneyland during the milestone anniversary, you may have to change up your game plan. A popular ride is about to close for refurbishment soon, and Disney hasn’t shared when it will reopen!

It looks like we’re going to have to put a pause on the wildest ride in the wilderness, because Big Thunder Mountain is about to close for refurbishment. First, it closed at Walt Disney World, and now it’s closing at Disneyland.

If you visit Disneyland’s website and click on the calendar to view operating times, you’ll see that it lists times from 8 AM to 11 PM on September 1st…

…but, on September 2nd, there are no times listed.

This means that Big Thunder Mountain will be closing for refurbishment on September 2nd. As of now, the furthest date you can view on the calendar is September 19th — and all those September dates have no times listed for Big Thunder. This means we’re not entirely sure how long the refurb will take or what the expected opening date is at this time.

Speaking of closures, Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion is officially closing as it changes to become the Haunted Mansion Holiday. Every year, the attraction is taken over by characters from the iconic The Nightmare Before Christmas, and it’s a fan favorite. So, it may affect any Disneyland plans you currently have.

Haunted Mansion Holiday

Haunted Mansion will close its doors to guests starting August 9th! The ride is scheduled to return on August 22nd, just in time to start celebrating the Halloween season.

Haunted Mansion Holiday

Haunted Mansion Holiday will be sticking around for a while, as it’s a Halloween and Christmas overlay. On Disneyland’s website, it doesn’t look like the classic version of the Haunted Mansion is scheduled to return until January 7th, 2026. So the happy haunts will be moved out for a while as Jack Skellington takes over.

  1. Just got back from Dollywood – it surpassed my expectations and value for the experience in every way! Guess what, all the rides were open and operational! Silverwood is very similar but on a smaller scale.

I was a loyally devoted Disney fan for my whole life, but Disney’s rides are old, closed, refaced (not replaced) or in disrepair. I’m tired of being fleeced at every chance and paying a fortune to stand in a ride queue. All the included helpful services are pretty much gone. We were stressed and glued to our phones for ride times and reservations. No handicap accessibility for many conditions. It’s not fun anymore, the magic is rapidly dying. Disney Parks are really dropping the ball, what a huge shame!
