NEWS: The FAA Warns That Thanksgiving Travel Could Be The Busiest It’s Been In 15 Years

If you’re traveling for Thanksgiving, it’s time to brace for impact! Traveling has been tough lately, thanks to the government shutdown, which luckily ended on November 12th.

Let’s go flying

Just as things are getting back to normal, holiday travel is gearing up. If you’re hitting the roads, skies, or even water to head home for the holidays this week, you should know this is expected to be the busiest travel season we’ve seen in 15 years!

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, this Thanksgiving travel period is expected to be wild this year. The expectation is that it will be the busiest we’ve seen in 15 years, and they anticipate that Tuesday, November 25th, will be the peak day with more than 52,000 flights across the country.

While that might sound daunting, don’t be too worried. The FAA is prepared! FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford shared, “Thanks to the dedication of our air traffic controllers and every FAA employee, we are ready for the holiday rush and take pride in helping travelers reach their friends and families during this important time of year.” He also shared that while it is a period of high traffic, they are committed to keeping the system running safely.

Orlando International Airport crowds

On Wednesday, November 26th, there will be roughly 50, 130 flights, and on Thanksgiving Day, that number drops to 25,611. Flights will peak again as crowds travel home on Sunday, November 30th, with 51,268 flights.

If you’re traveling during the holidays, be sure to book your flights in advance so you aren’t struggling to find a last-minute seat. We also like to give ourselves a buffer day if possible! This extra day before the holiday can help you plan if your flight gets delayed, or it gives you a day to relax before the festivities begin.

Airport crowds

During busy times of year, we also like to give ourselves a buffer between connecting flights. Tight connections can be the cause of missed flights for many reasons! You might not make it to your gate on time due to large airports, or you might even miss your second flight due to delays from the first. We like to give ourselves at least an hour, if not 90 minutes, between each flight when possible.

Travel crowds

If you want to save some money, consider traveling during off times! Oftentimes, the weekends have the highest prices and busiest crowds. According to CNN, traveling during the week can sometimes save you cash, which never hurts around the holidays. This can also help cut down on crowds, which can give you peace of mind.
