Earlier this year, Six Flags Entertainment Corporation announced that it would be permanently closing two of its theme parks in Bowie, Maryland.

Both Six Flags America and its Hurricane Harbor water park counterpart will permanently close at the end of the 2025 season, which is in just a few short days. Here’s everything we know.

Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor will permanently close at the end of the 2025 season, on November 2nd. This is part of the company’s “ongoing portfolio optimization program” and will be listed for sale by CBRE. The property is nearly 500 acres and will be marked for redevelopment.

When it was first announced, Six Flags President & CEO Richard A. Zimmerman said, “As part of our comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we have determined that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plan. After reviewing a number of options, we believe that marketing the property for redevelopment will generate the highest value and return on investment. We anticipate strong interest in the property and will continue to strategically pursue portfolio optimization opportunities as we work to unlock the full value of our portfolio.”

Hurricane Harbor closed for the season in September, but its permanent closure is part of wider changes taking place at Six Flags America and across additional Six Flags parks. California’s Great America in Santa Clara, California, must close by June 30th, 2028, unless Six Flags exercises an option to extend the lease through 2033.

Six Flags St. Louis could also be targeted for permanent closure.

Six Flags Entertainment is under pressure to “spin out or sell its real estate and make other changes that could boost the theme-park operator’s stock price.”

The requests come on the heels of Six Flags seeing its shares tank more than 55% year to date, in part because of bad weather and other park issues. Unfortunately, a lot of these problems popped up during the summer — Six Flags’ most vital tourist and annual pass season.

Just recently, Kansas City Chiefs football player Travis Kelce announced that he has invested in Six Flags Entertainment Corporation as he is a “lifelong Six Flags fan.” Kelce, along with New York City-based investment firm JANA Partners and “other high-profile business people,” now owns around 9% of the company.

“I am a lifelong Six Flags fan and grew up going to these parks with my family and friends,” Kelce said in a press release. “The chance to help make Six Flags special for the next generation is one I couldn’t pass up.”

Whether or not Kelce’s investment will help keep Six Flags from closing more theme parks remains to be seen.

  1. I have never been to a six flags theme park. I know some people who say they like it. I have wanted to go but am unable to afford it. Hopefully someday I get to experience it with my children and fiance.

  2. I love six flags allways visit and every time I go I just love it Moore please don’t close it up keep the memories coming for me and my family and other family’s God bless all of you ❤️.

  3. I am a very big fan, especially with the new merger, trying to experience as many parks as possible, unfortunately on my recent trip to OKC Frontier city, hate to say shouldn’t have Six Flags anywhere on its name. That place is a total misrepresentation of the theme parks I’ve grown to love. Total let down.

  4. Yes I’ve been going to six flags America for the longest time and I always enjoyed going there to get on my favorite rides and I especially loved going there for the hurricane harbor in the summer which was my favorite part and the fact that it’s permanently closing this year makes me really upset because I’ll miss all of my favorite rides and hurricane harbor.

  5. We took our grandkids to six flags great escape in the NY area
    Best experience! Adorable & fun!
    Hope it remains !
Have been to six flags in Dallas too !
    Lots of great memories!

  6. Very much a Great America in Santa Clara,,,been going since the park opened in 1976,, my wife and I are season gold ticket holders too,,I even worked for rides department,, mostly the Loggers Run or the Yankee Clipper in 1983,, back when the park was open every day from March to October,,I hope Kelsey helps to keep California,s Great America open for years to com

  7. Seriously, the one that should close is Six flags Great Escape Lake George… It’s a little park with literally a handful of rides, no real room for expansion.

  8. I was lucky enough to turn 21 in 1977,the 1st year “Marriott’s Great America ” in Gurnee, Illinois opened. Admission then $7.75 & free parking. Now my 30 year old son goes. He pays for a season pass & season parking pass (>300). My guess is this is the 1st Six Flags that Travis Kelce went to and he probably paid @$30+parking.

  9. No I am no longer a fan. They bought up all the independent theme parks like AstroWorld years ago in Houston Texas and turned it into a roller coaster park. Then it went bust and they closed the park down. The third or fourth largest city in America without an amusement park. Greed greed and greed are the three problems with the Six Flags and why they’re closing parks down.

  10. We visited Six Flags in Bowie on your vacation from the UK last year. Bitterly disappointed. A few good rides but lots were closed. Not a parch on Kings Dominion or Busch Gardens Europe just down the road. We were expecting so much more.
