Europe’s Entry Fees Are Skyrocketing – Here’s What You Need to Know

If you’re traveling internationally soon, make sure to read this! Important fees are starting to increase before you can even enter the country.

London Heathrow Airport

The European Commission is raising the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) fee by 186%.

The ETIAS fee is going from  €7 to €20. In USD, that’s about $8 to $23.

While this might not seem like a huge increase, remember, you’ll be entering this when you enter the country, and each member of the party needs to pay unless they are children under the age of 18, seniors over 70, or a few other exceptions. This change is scheduled to take effect in late 2026.

The fee applies to non-EU nationals from visa-free countries like the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Japan.

When you are about to enter the European Union, you will need to apply online and complete a short form with your details, including your birth date and passport information. The new fee will help pay for this system that is screening “each applicant for security, health, and migration risks.”

Most applicants will be approved in a few minutes, but if there are red flags, such as stolen passports or a known criminal connection, you may be denied entry.

If you’re on a cruise, entrance fees are usually included in the price of your cruise. If you see the prices start to increase, don’t be surprised.

  1. I’m sure it’s not the case but the higher fees feel like “revenge” on the also rising costs of entering the USA in the last few years. And I hear that they may double in the next year or so? There is also the added integrity tax or similar, that may be coming in. So in this context, the cost to enter Europe is mild in comparison.
