We love sharing theme park news, but we aren’t happy to share these theme park closures.

In May, Six Flags announced that it would close Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor in Maryland by the end of 2025. Six Flags added another theme park to its list of potential closures.

According to People, Six Flags California’s Great America may be closing its doors.

In an investors meeting, the Six Flags Chief Financial Officer, Brian Witherow, said, “Unless we decide to extend, and exercise one of our options to end that lease, that park’s last year without that extension would be after the ’27 season.”

The park is approximately 100 acres, and if they chose not to extend, it would close after the Halloween season in October 2027. It originally opened in 1976, meaning the park would be 50 years old when it closes, which is quite a milestone.

Cedar Fair merged with Six Flags in 2024, and in 2022, Cedar Fair sold the land of the park to Prologis, a real estate company, for $310 million. They agreed to lease the land for six to 11 years with a potential option to extend.

Six Flags has yet to confirm if they’re extending, but speaking about not extending in an investors meeting is a sign that this is something they’re discussing.

This doesn’t mean all of Six Flags is ending. Outside of Chicago, Six Flags Great America is receiving enhancements for its 50th anniversary, opening the same year as Six Flags California’s Great America.
