We got to go INSIDE Universal’s highly anticipated Epic Universe theme park!

We’re taking part in a media preview of the new (and VERY technologically advanced) park, which opens on May 22nd. As part of our tour, we got to check out each of the portals and attractions that make up Epic Universe, including How to Train Your Dragon –Isle of Berk!
Based on the mega-popular film series, the Isle of Berk is set between the first and second How To Train Your Dragon films, and is a “vibrant world where raucous Vikings and rambunctious dragons live together in hilarious harmony.”

While the land is headlined by some major attractions — the Hiccup’s Wing Gliders family thrill coaster, the Fyre Drill interactive boat ride, the Dragon Racer’s Rally, the Haddock Paddock meet & greet, and the Untrainable Dragon stage show — we also noticed some details that really drive home the immersive nature of the land during our time there.

Universal said that Isle of Berk would feature “immense architecture featuring hand-carved details, lush landscaping, and extraordinary heights of rolling hills surrounding vibrant dragon houses and local establishments.” Those promises are kept from the very start, as two massive Viking statues flank its entrance.

The land’s architecture is full of references to the film series, such as the dragon houses scattered throughout, including on the hill pictured above.
The presence of water in the land particularly stood out to us, as it gives Isle of Berk a natural dynamism that make it feel alive.

As we were exploring the portal, we even came across an Ice Dragon! This massive animatronic breathes out convincing “ice breath” (a fog-like substance).

Notably, the creature is simply a part of the land that can be stumbled upon, not a traditional “attraction” with a queue.

While the stars of the How to Train Your Dragon-themed Isle of Berk portal are sure to be the rides and attractions, the Epic Universe land is chock-full of thematic details that immerse gusts within the film franchise’s lore. Stay tuned to AllEars for more coverage of Epic Universe!
