The Harry Potter franchise is an absolute juggernaut among 21st-century IP and media. Spawning several books and movies, massive merchandise sales, and incredibly popular theme park landsHarry Potter is a goldmine — which is probably why Warner Bros. Discovery is creating a Harry Potter television series adaptation for HBO. While the series has been in pre-production for quite awhile, we now have some major updates to share.

Just this week, an open casting call was launched for the roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger.

It was previously announced that Francesca Gardiner would be the show’s showrunner and that Mark Mylod, who previously worked with Gardiner on Succession, will direct multiple episodes of the series while serving as executive producer.

According to HBO & Max Content Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys, “This new Max [now moving to HBO] Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years.”  Bloys said that the project would run for 10 consecutive years and Warner Bros. Discovery has added that the series will cover the Harry Potter books exclusively, leaving Fantastic Beasts out.

Per Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, the series is expected to premiere in 2026 on HBO, instead of solely on Max, which was the initial plan.

Last year, Zaslav emphasized the need to bring Harry Potter back while inadvertently trivializing Fantastic Beasts.

“We haven’t done anything with Harry Potter for more than a decade,” Zaslav said. He highlighted a need for Warner Bros. to rally around its big three — Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and DC Studios.

“When you put those franchises in, it’s the best-performing studio in the world. We need to deploy our best capital, and we need to do it with the best creative people in the world,” Zaslav added.

In the original movie franchise, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson played Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger respectively. It is uncertain if the stars will return in any capacity for this new series.
