3 Unspoken Rules for Flying on United Airlines

Are you hopping on a plane soon?

There’s no doubt that the entire experience from booking to packing and layovers to delay can be incredibly stressful, and we haven’t even talked about which of the many airlines to fly with. If you’ve chosen to fly United Airlines, there are a couple of unspoken rules you need to know before you fly.

Book Directly With United Airlines

Let’s start things off with the “golden rule” of booking flights: “Always book directly with your airline of choice,” which would be United Airlines in this example. To be sure, platforms like Hopper, Travelocity, and Priceline are great for comparing prices and finding deals, but when it comes to finalizing your purchase, there are perks to going straight to the source.

Booking directly with United ensures you get the best price and access to their customer support, which means that if any issues arise, such as flight changes or cancellations, you’ll typically have an easier time resolving them.

Plus, booking directly with United can come with added perks like bonus miles or exclusive promotions. So, next time you’re booking a flight with United, remember that United.com is your BFF.

Marriott-United Bonvoy Rewards

Speaking of exclusive offers, it’s probably safe to say that we all love racking up reward points, right? Did you know that there’s a partnership between Marriott Bonvoy and United MileagePlus? That means you can link your accounts and unlock extra perks and rewards.

Once your accounts are linked, you can earn bonus points and miles with both programs. You might have some free flights, hotel stays, and upgrades to look forward to in the future. So, make sure to link those accounts, and not miss out on any rewards!

Armrests

So you know how all of us travelers have been in a quasi “battle” for the armrests? You know what I’m talking about. It’s that situation where we’re awkwardly trying to “claim our territory” without stepping on anyone’s toes (or in this case, elbows). But did you know there’s an unspoken rule for armrest etiquette on United flights?

Earlier this year, we heard accounts of flight attendants stating that each passenger is only entitled to one (1) armrest. That means the person in the middle seat should use the armrest to their right, and the person in the aisle or window seat does the same. The armrest on the aisle side should remain clear for carts and passengers walking down the plane. (The armrest would be on the left for the other side of the plane.)

There hasn’t been official word that this is a firm “rule” or merely a suggestion. We’d definitely recommend asking your flight attendants and being courteous.

  1. Unpublished rule for United, in my experience, don’t fly them if you are disabled or traveling with someone who is. I suffered, gave them another chance and suffered again for my naivety. They chose to pass the buck and showed me that my kind (disabled) weren’t valued.

  2. United horrible first class seats and food. Flew from IAD to Kona. Seats all through plane need some padding. Food was nasty both breakfast and dinner. Eggs and rice in first class. Seats were crowded and uncomfortable.
I got the survey and all the questions were did flight attendants smile or say hello and I answered who cares. I was on the plane for over 10 hrs. I want first class comfort. I don’t care if someone smiles United !!!! Stop worrying about that stuff and fix your problems first.

  3. I’m having a problem getting a reimbursement from united.lots of red tape.on a flight to n.y flying with my 3 grandchildren the flight landed in Baltimore Maryland leaving us stranded.the plane could not continue on to n.y or go back to chicago.a gate agent said you are on your own and assured us United would pY for alternate transportation hence we took an amtrack to n.y.at a cost of 503.00 .now they don’t want to reimburse me .very troubling

  4. Have had very good experiences with United Airlines every flight I’ve taken. Cannot say the same for Delta and American. United has worked with me to change flights, staff has always been the best, have had no issues with any flight I’ve taken.

  5. I flied united business class 26 years ago with my then 1 1/2 yo son and they didn’t have any baby food for him for the entire 12 hour flight even though I pre-ordered it and tried to confirm with them since checking in all the way to boarding. They kept deferring me to later. The flight was grounded for 3 hours and I ran out of food for my son. After take off while serving food was when I was told that there’s no soft food for my son. They only offered apples where I had to scrape with a small spoon. Then they gave me a long expired bowl of macaroni & cheese. It was so hard, when the bowl fell on the floor, it didn’t even splash. There were other unpleasant exchanges during the grounding, like yelling at my son for getting out of his seats and me for not controlling him, etc. By then, I was so mad and just lost it with the stewardess. Like the recent Terrell Davis incident, I was escorted off the plane by some agents ready to handcuff me when we landed at destination. But I’m not a big star, so got no apologies or anything from the airline. I vowed never fly with them again. They are horrible. If you notice, all those awful incidences happen on United. You wonder why… they got a toxic pissful attitude towards passengers. My blood still boils thinking about that awful flight.

  6. Well since they feel dominant in their rules, you have a CHOICE fly another carrier, people are so unaware of the obvious solution, what a world

  7. Will never fly United again. This July was total fiasco in Portland, Oregon. From sitting on plane for 1.5 hours, then deboarding due to cancelation. Long lines and few staff to assist with rescheduling.

    1. I have over 1.2 million miles on United and have observed a steep and steady decline in the level of service at both the UAL gates and while onboard. Too many of the flight attendants simply appear to be just going through the motions when serving passengers and they quickly disappear for the remainder of flights right after any drink/snack service. The only exception is when I am flying First Class. These days you are rarely made to feel that their employees really appreciate your patronage.

      1. I find the customer services a problem if you have any problems. They cannot solve any problems, answer is “ our policy”.
