Why People Counted ‘Avatar’ Sequel Out Too Soon

Despite a slightly underwhelming opening weekend, Avatar: The Way of Water is still enticing moviegoers to return to theaters both in the United States and abroad.

Does the sequel have what it takes to become the highest-grossing international release of 2022?

Movie analysts think so! According to Variety, the James Cameron film is primed to overtake another popular sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. Just yesterday, Avatar: The Way of Water grossed another $70.4 million, bringing it up to a total of $337.8 million domestically and $762.8 million globally.

The international audience is what most likely will put this movie past Top Gun’s $1.5 billion total. While Avatar likely won’t surpass Top Gun’s $718.8 million gross within the United States, analysts are anticipating Avatar to overshadow Top Gun’s $770 million international gross at some point on Thursday, December 29th, 2022.

Disney pinned its hopes on the box office giant. With movie theater releases seeing declining audience numbers, Disney was anticipating the sequel to the highest-grossing film of all time would help revive the industry. After the release of Avatar: The Way of Water didn’t perform as expected Disney stocks took a hit.
