It’s been an interesting year for movie premieres, to say the least!

We’ve seen some films go directly to streaming services, and those that did premiere in movie theaters didn’t always do as well as the studios hoped they would. Recently, we’ve started to see a bit of a rebound in box office numbers, and this weekend’s major release hit a BIG milestone!
This past weekend, Godzilla vs. Kong premiered in movie theaters across the U.S., as well as on HBO Max. According to Variety, the Warner Bros. film made $32 million over the weekend and $48.5 million in its first 5 days.

This marks the biggest 3-day release since the pandemic hit, nearly doubling the numbers for the no. 2 spot, Wonder Woman 1984, which made $16.7 million on opening weekend. Godzilla vs. Kong premiered in 3064 cinemas across North America, which is the highest count since theaters closed down due to the Coronavirus. The box office numbers for the film are especially impressive considering the fact that it premiered on HBO Max for no extra fee as well.

In the future, this gives other studios hope that the movie theater business will rebound successfully. These numbers for Godzilla vs. Kong may encourage other films to keep their summer opening dates as moviegoers get more comfortable with returning to the cinemas.
