Since Disney’s announcement regarding the layoffs affecting the Parks, Experiences and Products division of the company, we’ve seen quite a few updates on the situation coming from various unions.

Now, we’re getting more updates from another union that represents employees at Disneyland Resort.

According to The Orange County Register, “Disneyland’s union employees make up at least 28,000 of the 32,000 cast members at the two Anaheim theme parks.” As more unions hear about how the layoffs will affect their members, more details about the situation are being released.

Teamsters Local 495 in California and Local 385 in Florida represent various Disney employees in including full-time and part-time workers working as attraction hosts, characters, bus drivers, ranch hands, laundry workers, parking attendants, animal handlers, truck drivers, warehouse workers and other classifications. According to a press release posted on Teamsters Local 495’s website, Disney has informed Teamsters that over 1,400 CT (casual temporary or seasonal) and CR (casual regular or part-time) cast members who are Teamsters Local 495 members at the Anaheim Resort will be affected by the layoffs.

The notice goes on to specify that the union has a video conference call scheduled with upper management to bargain over this new development. It appears Teamsters Local 495 will be taking the position that “as the furlough ends, the twelve-month recall provision in the contract begins at the time of the actual layoffs- not when the furlough began. This would mean…that no new employees may be hired prior to asking the existing cast to return to work in seniority order.”

The Orange County Register also reports that, while an exact count of the individuals who are set to be laid off from Disneyland has not been released, “early estimate puts the number in excess of 8,400 employees — with the number expected to rise.”
