In these days and weeks of uncertainty, many state leaders have provided their insight on when life may return to normal, or perhaps to a new normal. With Disneyland as well as Disney World entering their second month of closures, many have wondered when we might see signs that the parks are ready to reopen.
California Governor Gavin Newsom shared on Tuesday his thoughts on when, or rather when not, he expects mass gatherings to return to everyday lives.
According to the Governor, mass gatherings “that bring in hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands of strangers, all together across every conceivable difference, health and otherwise, is not in the cards based upon our current guidelines and current expectations.” Of course, places such as Disneyland do exactly that: bringing tens of thousands of strangers together on a daily basis.
In his recent remarks, he mentioned the presence of herd immunity and the availability of a vaccine as two key factors in moving forward in allowing these mass gatherings to return and for the state to experience what will end up being a slow reopening of businesses. While Newsom noted that things could always change, he did not set any clear expectation on a timeline on when we might see restrictions such as these being lifted or altered.
Looking ahead to the question of mass gatherings returning this summer, Newsom commented, “When you suggest June, July, August, it is unlikely.” He also pointed out several measures he would want to see in place first and foremost to ensure public safety. These measures include readily available testing, the ability to perform contact tracing, the possibility of temperature screening in establishments such as restaurants, and distancing measures in public places such as schools.
We will continue to monitor any new developments that may arise in the coming weeks.
