As someone who goes to Disney World a LOT, I finally realized I can’t keep trying it like a “once in a lifetime” vacation when I’m there basically once a month.

This is what’s led me to discover how I can try to be “healthier” at the resort. Throughout this year, I’ve been trying (and sometimes failing), to rediscover dining in Disney this way. After talking with my friends, I realized I’m not alone in this hunt, so I’m here to share all of my methods!
Before we dive in, I have a few disclaimers to make. First, if you’re on vacation and don’t want to worry about what you’re eating — then don’t! It’s your vacation, and you need to enjoy it the way YOU want to. Second, I’m not a doctor, and “healthy” can be hard to define. To me, being healthy is focusing on protein, vegetables, fruit, and lower calories. That’s important to remember as I share how I go about dining in the parks.

First, you can always bring your own snacks and drinks. This is something that I have found VERY helpful because I’m a hungry girl. I eat three square meals a day, and with all of that extra walking, I need something to help keep my energy up. Shelf-stable items like Chomps or packets of nuts are easy for me to toss in my bag and get going. I also like bringing my own protein shakes so I can use them as a coffee creamer with my Joffrey’s cold brew. You can always order the Starbucks protein coffees, but that isn’t my personal preference.

Study the menus ahead of time! Disney quick services and table services have a variety of options, but if you have specific dietary requests, you can’t just roll up to any location. Most spots (not all) have salads, which are good for you, but I would personally be starving if I only ate salads. Each theme park has at least one spot where I can get something that isn’t deep-fried or overly sugary. My personal favorites are Columbia Harbour House in Magic Kingdom, Sunshine Seasons in EPCOT, Backlot Express in Hollywood Studios (specifically for the Chicken Teriyaki Bowl), and Satu’li Canteen in Animal Kingdom. Being prepped can make your days so much easier, and it can help you stay clear of temptations. (Although, let’s be real! I’m gonna give in every now and then, and that’s fine).

For snacks, look for fruits, fresh snacks, and not processed items. Locations like Prince Eric’s Village Market and Liberty Square Market in Magic Kingdom, Anaheim Produce in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, The Land Cart in EPCOT, and Harambe Fruit Market in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. These spots offer pickles in a pouch (which are 0 calories), fruits, hummus snack packs, and more. The hummus snack packs are the best in my opinion!

Consider splitting meals and snacks if you want to try it all! Not only is this a good budgeting hack, but it can also be good for your health. I love Disney World snacks to an obsessive degree. It’s unrealistic that I’m going to go to the park and then NOT have a sweet treat or two or five. Sharing my snacks with a friend or family member can be the best way for me to feel satisfied without gorging on sweets.

Pick and choose your calories! This is definitely the part where I fail most frequently. Every snack smells so good. Every dessert looks so chocolatey. I really don’t want to try EVERYTHING, but when I do that, I end up feeling sick and bloated for the rest of my trip. As I’m walking around the park, I try to make sure I’m eating full meals and am very strategic about my snacks in between. I’m definitely getting a dessert after an earlier dinner, so I might have to avoid another sweet treat earlier in the day.

Consider skipping the sides! For most quick-service meals, you’re going to get fries as your side. This is another area I fail in, but do as I say, not as I do here. While you can’t always choose another side, oftentimes you can get Cutie oranges instead of fries. This is a great and easy swap that means you can still eat, but you might not have as much grease and sodium. If you can’t swap it out, consider forgoing the sides altogether. You might be stronger than I am, because I love a French fry.

Drink ALL the water. You hear my team talk about this a lot because of the heat in Orlando, but if you’re really focused on your health, this is extra important. When you are snacking throughout the parks, there is a lot of grease, sodium, and sugar in your meals. Honestly, this is what makes them taste so good, and I’m not mad at it, but this is also what can make your dehydration even worse. Drinking water can help your body stay regulated and hydrated.

Don’t count out the special drinks just yet! I love an ice-cold Coke in Disney World, but I can’t deny that there is a TON of sugar in them. That being said, I love a special drink when I’m in the parks. I prefer Coke Zero, but oftentimes restaurants only have Diet Coke. While these options aren’t perfect, they’re a good way to get a similar feeling without the calories and sugar. If you want an alcoholic beverage (which I often do in EPCOT), I like to walk while I sip on it. This can help get my steps in, and sipping slowly helps me savor one drink rather than quickly having two or three. Life’s too short not to have a nice sip on vacation!

There are so many different ways to be healthy in Disney World, but most of it comes down to planning. If you want some more tips and tricks, our friends over at DFB have an entire page on healthy eating in the parks! I try and fail every day to do better, but as long as I’m trying, I can’t be too upset with myself. No matter how you choose to dine in Disney World, make sure you enjoy it. Disney should still be fun! Don’t forget to keep following AllEars for more Disney tips, tricks, and more.
