We all know Southwest is moving to assigned seating, which will have a redesigned cabin that includes premium seating options, an enhanced Rapid Rewards program with new benefits for Credit Cardholders, a new packaged vacations offering, and new international airline partnerships. The new seat choices and assigned seating are bookable NOW for travel starting on January 27th, 2026, and beyond.

Hold on, that’s not everything that will be changing. Southwest is also bringing in-seat power ports and larger overhead bins to its new 737 Max 8 airplanes. The airline is also in the process of adding them to existing aircraft.

Lastly, Southwest will be implementing new features to its app to make your day of travel even easier. There will be digital self-service travel tools online and in the app so you can track your baggage, buy upgraded boarding, and buy a lap child seat.

It may not be “bags fly free,” and honestly, these new changes may not make up for some of the amazing perks that are no longer available. That being said, it is nice to see some good news coming from the airline for a change. For more travel news and updates, be sure to stay tuned to AllEars.
