The one thing that is constant about Disney World is that it is always changing, and that includes the weather.

Florida, including Disney World, can be impacted by hurricanes and tropical storms. As we approach the beginning of hurricane season, there are some things you need to know if you are heading to Disney World from June to November.
If you’re looking for a travel agent to help with your vacation, we recommend our friends at Mouse Fan Travel. They’re experts in the field with over 20 years of vacation planning experience, and they can help take a bunch of the stress out of the entire booking process for you!
1. Know the Policies
It’s important to understand the policies Disney has in place. If a hurricane warning is issued by the National Hurricane Center for the Orlando area—or for your place of residence—within 7 days of your scheduled arrival date, you may reschedule or cancel your Walt Disney Travel Company Disney Resort hotel packages and most room only reservations (booked directly with Disney) without any cancellation or change fees imposed by Disney. Most room-only and vacation packages can be modified or cancelled online, including changes to travel dates.

2. Be Prepared for Rain
Even if a storm doesn’t hit directly, you might experience rain during your trip. This isn’t unusual for Florida weather anyway, so it’s always best to be prepared for it to rain. It could last all day or could be a quick shower, but you don’t want to get caught unprepared.

Our favorite poncho is the Frogg Togg Reusable Poncho. We have tested these ourselves in the parks, and they keep us dry when it pours. These ponchos are much better and cheaper than the ones you can buy inside the parks, so be sure to grab one and pack it in your park bag so you are ready for the rain!

We tested these shoe covers last year, and we can’t stop talking about them. They kept our feet dry when it was flooding in the parks. Walking around in wet shoes can cause blisters, so these can really help save your feet.

This mini umbrella and case are so simple to pack in your park bag. Just be sure to pull it out of your bag while going through security. One of our favorite things about this umbrella is that it has a lifetime replacement guarantee.

3. Keep a Watch on the Weather
Stay up to date on any storms leading up to your trip to think about impacts on driving or flying to and from Disney World. You can easily forget about things while you’re in the Disney bubble, but you’ll want to download a weather app to check the weather daily for chances of storms.

4. Expect Closures
Disney World parks can close during a hurricane. While it is not often that they do close for a storm, it is possible. If the parks are open, certain rides and activities might be closed as well. The water parks and outdoor rides like Slinky Dog Dash and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train might be closed.

Disney KNOWS how to prepare for hurricanes and has many plans in place to make sure its properties continue to have water and food. But not every Disney World hotel is equal when it comes to storm considerations.

Our TOP choice of Disney resort, if we’re going to be stranded during a hurricane, are the villas at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. They win points in all the areas: great amenities, connection to a central building where you can access needed essentials, shopping, and dining, and an entertaining theme for kids. This is yet another resort with “fancy cabin” vibes.

5. Adjust Your Packing
If there is a hurricane coming and if Disney decides to close the parks, you might be spending more time in your hotel room. We suggest packing board games, cards, or extra toys for kids. You don’t want to be caught in the hotel room with nothing.

Disney also tries to make it fun by bringing characters to the resorts. We have also seen them do Disney Trivia, free Disney movie screenings, and other fun activities to keep the guests entertained.

6. Pack Your Manners
During times of a hurricane, as we said, things can be closed. Cast Members are trying to make the best of situations so give them grace. Even if your trip doesn’t go exactly the way you planned because of the weather, be patient.

In all of this, Disney has your best interest when a hurricane or storm is coming. For more tips for your Disney World vacation, be sure to follow AllEars.net.
