American Airlines’ new boarding technology could prove controversial.

Air travel is often…unpleasant, to say the least. From baggage fees and boarding requirements to flight delays and cancelations, there are tons of minor and major inconveniences that run a flight. Now American Airlines is tackling one of them, though their solution may end up doing more harm than good.
In late October 2024, American Airlines launched a new pilot program designed to dissuade passengers from cutting the gate line and attempting to board their flight before their boarding group is called.

The technology, which is being tested at three airports: Albuquerque New Mexico’s International Sunport Airport, Tucson Arizona’s International Airport in Arizona, and Crystal City, Virginia’s Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, will alert gate agents with an audible sound when a passenger tries to scan a ticket ahead of their assigned boarding group’s time.

According to the airline, “The new technology is designed to ensure customers receive the benefits of priority boarding with ease and helps improve the boarding experience by providing greater visibility into boarding progress for our team.”

Once the noise alerts the gate agent, the passenger will be “politely” informed that the agent will be unable to accept the pass yet, and they’ll need to rejoin the line and wait for their boarding group to be called.
While this sounds fine on paper, there are some questions about the amount of public shaming involved in this practice. In addition, there are some instances where a customer may be able to board out of a group order, including when traveling with a companion of higher boarding status. According to the airline, the gate agent has a “quick way to override the alert and accept the pass” in those types of situations.

American Airlines is testing a new system to stop passengers from cutting the boarding line, however, there are some questions regarding it. Stay tuned to AllEars for further travel industry updates.
