Peter Pan is a classic Disney movie from 1953.

That’s why Disney parkgoers continue to flock to the opening day Peter Pan’s Flight attraction. Recently, Disney made some changes to the popular Peter Pan ride in Magic Kingdom to make the ride more sensitive to today’s times, and it seems like those same changes may be on the way to Disneyland.
When Peter Pan’s Flight reopened in Magic Kingdom after a short closure for refurbishment, the scene with Tiger Lily and the Neverland Tribe was changed to be more culturally sensitive and accurate.

The previous scene depicted harmful and incorrect stereotypes and was updated with more appropriate changes. Now, Tiger Lily can be seen dancing with her great-grandmother while each animatronic is depicted with dignity and cultural authenticity. According to The Orange County Register, we will be seeing these same changes made in Disneyland.

No timeline has been announced for the changes in Disneyland, but Disney has confirmed that similar changes will be made. Disney shared that, “Walt Disney Imagineering has a longstanding history of making updates and enhancements to keep attractions fresh, authentic, relatable and relevant, ”

Peter Pan is currently on Disney+, but it includes a disclaimer that states that the stereotypes that are depicted in the original film “were wrong then and are wrong now.” Disney goes on to say that they “want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it, and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together.” It seems that updating these rides to be more inclusive is one of the steps the company is taking to do just that.

The new scene brings more sensitivity and relevance to the ride. Peter Pan’s Flight in Magic Kingdom opened on August 16th, and we’ll be watching to see when the ride closes in Disneyland and check out any updates made when it reopens.
