Nearly 100 years after his first appearance, Oswald The Lucky Rabbit will be getting an original series on Disney+!
That’s right! The beloved character created by Walt Disney in 1927 will be making a return. Who better to bring this character back to life than Jon Favreau, who has a proven track record when it comes to storytelling.
Jon Favreau has been involved in many Disney projects. He kick-started the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the director of Iron Man. He was also the director of the Disney live-action remakes such as The Jungle Book and The Lion King. He most recently has been involved in the Star Wars universe as a creator for the Disney+ original series, The Mandalorian. Now, Favreau will take on the classic character, Oswald (with Walt Disney Studios) as a writer and producer, per Deadline.
Even though he hasn’t been around in the Disney World parks, Oswald plays an important role in the rich history of The Walt Disney Company. He was crucial in the making of Disney’s mascot!
After Walt Disney created Oswald, the vibrant rabbit was featured in 27 animated shorts. However, Universal got its hands on the character and took full control. So, in 1928, Walt had to find a replacement for Oswald. This led to the creation of Mickey Mouse!
The lucky rabbit ended up in the public domain in 2023, and now he is coming back home to Disney. Jon Favreau has been hard at work for Disney over the past few years, filling his portfolio as the executive producer for Disney+ spin-offs The Book of Boba Fett, Ashoka, and Skeleton Crew. Additionally, he is directing and producing the upcoming Mandalorian and Grogu film (releasing in 2026). So, having Favreau’s creative touch in the Oswald series gets us extra excited!
Remember, this series will be a Disney+ EXCLUSIVE. So make sure you have your subscriptions ready. At this time, Disney hasn’t shared the release date for the series or any details about the cast.
