5 Grocery Store Staples That Are About To Be BANNED

A new ban on Red Dye No. 3 was recently enacted, requiring food and drug companies to remove the additive from many items people in the U.S. ingest.

Red Dye No. 3

Food companies have until January 2027 to create new recipes for their products, while companies that distribute medicines such as cough syrups have until January 2028 to remove the dye. These changes mean that several items you may be used to getting at your local grocery store (and stocking up on for your trip to Disney World) will be banned. Here are five of those items to be on the lookout for.

The following items are known to have Red Dye No. 3 in them. These items as they are currently made and distributed will be banned from grocery stores. You may still see these products being sold after January 2027, but they will have to have new ingredients that do not include the banned Red Dye No. 3.

Toaster Pastries

Toaster pastries, such as the popular PopTart brand, are an easy on-the-go breakfast or snack, especially for in your hotel room on your Disney World vacation. However, these items may include the now-banned Red Dye No. 3.

Not all toaster pastries contain Red Dye No. 3, but you may want to check the boxes if you want to avoid it.

Popular Candies

Several popular candies, and many around Disney World, contain Red Dye No. 3. These include but are not limited to, Pez Candy Assorted Fruit, Dubble Bubble Original Twist Bubble Gum, Brach’s Candy Corn, Jelly Belly candies, and Trolli Sour Crunchy Crawlers.

Minnie’s Sour Taffy

As you’re stocking up on your favorite candies at the grocery store, be aware that they may be changing or no longer available after January 2027.

Certain Ice Cream and Frozen Yogurt Flavors

You may see some ice cream and frozen yogurt flavors, especially those of the red variety, changing over the next couple of years!

Certain Sodas and Fruit-Flavored Drinks

Red beverages, such as certain sodas, sports drinks, or juices, may contain Red Dye No. 3. That means these drinks will need to have a reformulated recipe or leave the shelves altogether.

Frozen Fruit Bars

If you like to have frozen fruit bars on hand as easy snacks, you may want to be aware that some of them could contain the now-banned dye. When it’s hot in Disney World these could make great snacks to have in your hotel room, but they could be changing or not offered in the near future.

However, be aware that in the coming years, many items may be changing or not offered due to this new ban on Red Dye No. 3.

  1. Cleary won’t be going away. Manufacturers will have to just use a different coloring agent that isn’t banned. There are a few of them. One derived from insects and another from beets.

    1. This dye and many others have been banned in Europe for forever. A lot of their stuff are just more of a bland version of colors. They’ve survived. So will we. These things aren’t going anywhere.
