It’s always tough to say goodbye, but this long-running attraction is nearing its final chapter.

LEGOLAND is known for its whimsical and fun LEGO-themed attractions and lands, but did you also know it’s home to the longest-running shows in Florida, with nearly 90 years under its belt?
Brickbeard’s Watersport Stunt Show delivers thrilling performances daily at LEGOLAND Florida. Starring the iconic Captain Brickbeard and the fierce Calico Jade, this action-packed show features Pirate Athlete Training Recruits showcasing jaw-dropping water stunts such as flyboarding, wakeboarding, and barefoot skiing.

But did you know that 85 years ago, long before LEGO pirates took over, this show made its debut? Before LEGOLAND opened, its site was home to the historic Cypress Gardens, a beloved Florida attraction since 1939. Famous for its iconic water ski show, it showcased early watersports like synchronized swimming and played a huge role in popularizing water skiing.

Cypress Gardens closed in 2009, but in 2011, LEGOLAND opened its doors and gave the iconic water ski show the ultimate LEGO makeover.
Sadly, its historic run has come to an end, with LEGOLAND officials announcing its closure back in mid-December, 2024. The last day to catch this swashbuckling spectacular is on December 30th, 2024.

Though we are definitely sad about the news, the Cypress Gardens Water Ski Team stated that they are dedicated to keeping the area’s tradition alive and will host monthly shows on Lake Silver.

The property is incredibly beautiful, and I hope something can be worked out with the state of Florida. The state currently oversees Weekee Watchee, Silver Springs, and Rainbow Springs as state parks. Not only are the parks protected and properly cared for, but their beauty is preserved for both today’s citizens, visitors, and future generations. It would certainly make Florida more beautiful and preserve a legacy of the histories of these ironic, former attractions.
Back in the early 60s when I was around 2 yrs. old I was staying with my aunt and her family in Winter Haven while my mom had surgery. When she was cleared to travel my parents and older brother came down from SC to bring me home. We got to visit Cypress Gardens. Was amazed by the performance of the skiers. I have a picture of us among a group on a glass bottom boat. Not sure if the boat ride was also a part of Cypress Gardens. I was not happy in the picture because my brother decided to tease me saying I was fish bait since I was so tiny. Thanks for the walk down “memory lane”.
