Hazardous Waste Removal Was Called to Disney’s Hollywood Studios – And It Was All My Fault

Even if it is The Most Magical Place on Earth, bad things can happen in Disney World.

Cinderella Castle in Magic Kingdom

I go to Disney World almost every single day for my job and every day can’t be perfect. I learned this the hard way recently when hazardous waste removal was called to Hollywood Studios– and it was all my fault.

I was filming a video on the first day of Disney’s brand new Lightning Lane Multi Pass service when everything went WRONG. You can see that video right here!

I had a bit of downtime between two Lightning Lanes and was craving a Famous Cobb Salad from The Hollywood Brown Derby. With the outside walk-up lounge closed for rain, I joined the mobile Walk-up Waitlist for the full restaurant in the My Disney Experience app.

I definitely recommend using the mobile wait lists for last-minute table service meals! They were able to seat me in just 10 minutes. I ordered my usual (the Cobb Salad and a dirty martini) and was having a delightful solo dinner when things went awry. Warning: You might want to stop reading if you are squeamish about blood.

My nose started bleeding. No biggie, it happens. With (futile) hopes that it was a minor situation, I tried to get it to stop at the table without drawing any attention to myself. This was to no avail. The nosebleed got worse and I ended up having to flag down a waiter.

With paper napkins pressed to my nose I asked the Cast Member where the bathroom was (I knew but I WAS panicking) and he directed me. He asked if any had gotten on the table and I told him no. He offered me a stain wipe for a spot on my pants and I hurried off to get myself sorted. I was feeling a little embarrassed – especially because it took long enough that a Cast Member came to check on me in the restroom.

Eventually, the nosebleed did stop but this is where things get interesting. I got back to my table and finished my meal. When my server returned he apologized and told me he wasn’t allowed to touch anything on the table so he couldn’t clear it for me. I, of course, understood so I paid and headed out to finish my video – a little embarrassed but no worse for wear.

I was told later that yes, a hazardous waste team in protective clothing DID come to the restaurant after I left to clear my table. They used special bags and took everything – right down to the bread basket – before sanitizing the wall, chairs, table, and floor. They then closed off the women’s restroom (where I had waited out my nosebleed) and cleaned it as well.

This definitely came as a bit of a surprise to me considering I know I didn’t get any visible blood anywhere but it shows that Disney takes health and safety very seriously. Even with a minor nosebleed, they called out all the stops to make sure that guests are safe. At the same time, I’m sure there are some bleeding instances in the parks that Disney never finds out about, but if they do know, they make sure that everything is clean.

Hopefully this is the one and only time I bring hazardous waste teams to the park, but at least we learned something.

    1. That would be our custodial team that cleans up after blood not the hazardous waste team. All disney custodial cast members are trained in cleaning up blood we do it every day from the smallest scratch to bigger nosebleeds or cuts.
      Thank you for the recognition.
