NEW Theme Park Expansion Is Coming to SeaWorld San Antonio

Sure, California and Florida are known for being heavy hitters when it comes to theme parks thanks to Disney and Universal, but it’s starting to seem like another state might soon be a haven for thrill seekers.

Universal has announced a brand-new kids’ park for the Lone Star State, and a Peppa Pig theme park is coming soon, too. SeaWorld certainly isn’t new to Texas, but they are getting into the race with a potential new expansion — here’s what we know.

According to the Orlando Business Journal, United Parks & Resorts — owners of SeaWorld San Antonio — are pursuing developing a theme park expansion.

The “confidential project” filing shows the expansion will reportedly be nearly 150,000 square feet and will “tout its animal rescue efforts,” including new construction and a renovation.

An earlier filing involved the name “Rescue Jr,” which is the name of an area SeaWorld San Diego added to its park in 2023. This area features rides, water play areas, climbing structures, and other features that exhibit SeaWorld’s commitment to animal rescue and rehabilitation.

Jim Lake, president of SeaWorld San Diego, said the new area is a “first of its kind” attraction that “puts marine animal rescue at the forefront.” While SeaWorld has yet to confirm this is what’s planned for the San Antonio location, we do know that Jeff Davis recently stepped in as the new president not too long ago.

The filing indicates SeaWorld San Antonio plans on beginning construction this fall with work hopefully being complete by spring 2025 with an estimated cost of $6 million.

The most recent addition to SeaWorld San Antonio was Catapult Falls, a water thrill ride that opened earlier this year. For now, SeaWorld hasn’t made any official announcements about this potential expansion.

On the other hand, though, we’re also excited about the new Universal theme park coming to Frisco, Texas. Called Universal Kids Resort, this theme park will offer a unique theme park experience that is tailored specifically to kids. It will be a smaller-scale theme park to “inspire the unbridled creativity of kids through play, discovery and imagination, with a different look and feel from existing destinations.”

This new theme park will include lots of family-friendly attractions, themed lands, interactive shows, and character meet and greets.

Plus, North America’s second Peppa Pig Theme Park is set to open in 2024 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. This is designed to be the ultimate theme park experience for little ones.
