We Feel Like the Public Needs to See What Disney Created. We’re Sorry.

It may still be summertime, but it’s not too early to start prepping for Halloween!

Magic Kingdom

Disney has already announced Halloween celebrations for the parks, and we’re getting HYPED. Typically, Disney Halloween is more magical and whimsical than truly spooky, with Mickey pumpkins and cute characters in costumes. But if you dig a little bit into Disney Halloweens of the past, there’s something QUITE scary we had to share with you.

A few years ago, D23 shared an article with a blast from the past — Ben Cooper Disney Halloween masks from the Walt Disney Archives. And in honor of spooky season approaching, we think it’s time to resurrect some of these!

First up, we’ve got to talk about the DUCKS. Not only is there a slightly frightening Donald Duck mask (is his tongue sticking out?!), but there’s also a truly nightmare-inducing version of Professor Ludwig von Drake. The empty eye sockets are necessary, we suppose, but they’re quite unsettling.

Listen, we love wearing Mickey ears as much as the next guy, but do we really need half a child’s FACE attached to them for Halloween? And what’s with the black eye mask?! Is this kid one of the Incredibles?! We’ve always wanted to be Mousketeers but I’m not sure that this is the best way to do it.

The next one looks slightly less creepy on its own, but we’ll reserve judgment until we see a photo of someone wearing it. If retro TRON is your thing, represent team blue with this funky helmet-mask combo.

And finally, maybe the most nightmare-inducing of all, the Aurora mask. She looks like the even spookier wife of the creepy Burger King mask. Right?! Why are her eyes shaped like that? And her chin is scary in a way I can’t explain. Girl, you okay?!

Thankfully, these will hopefully stay in the archives and we won’t have to encounter anyone wearing them this Halloween. We might run the opposite direction if we do. Nothing like old-school Disney to be unknowingly scary. After all, they are the people who created some truly terrifying iterations of Mickey Mouse.
