FIRST LOOK! Disney Just Showed Us a Floor You Can Walk On FOREVER 😲

We’ve been getting a TON of new Disney technology news, and we’re so here for it!

Buzz!

We’ve seen some pretty amazing (and some terrifying) animatronics and other technology over the decades, but we got an exclusive chance to see some amazing things during a visit to Walt Disney Imagineering this week! One thing we couldn’t wait to check out was Disney’s new invention HoloTile!

We were invited to see demonstrations of many projects being worked on at Imagineering. One thing we had heard a lot about and were excited to see in person was HoloTile.

There it is!

This is an entirely new type of treadmill flooring that is “omni-directional, modular, and expandable,” according to Disney. It is made for people to have virtual reality experiences, and multiple people can use the same floor! They can walk unlimited distances, never run into each other, and never walk off the HoloTile surface.

We can see many applications for this!

We learned that Imagineers play a game called BB8 Ball on the HoloTile. Disney could use this new technology in project development — for example, Imagineers could virtually walk through an attraction to see the holes in it. It would also have applications in stage shows, and of course in rides — imagine your ride vehicle taking you virtually through an attraction on HoloTile.

HoloTile!

Imagineer Lanny Smoot is responsible for this innovation, and he was there to demonstrate it for us. We saw how HoloTile can give you “superpowers”! Someone off the HoloTile can control the movement of chairs or other objects on it!

Superpowers!

This flooring can be easily expanded by adding more tiles (and vice versa).

We can’t wait to see how Disney uses this technology in the future, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated, so stay tuned to AllEars!
