When it comes to interacting with celebrities and fan-favorite brands, Twitter is a popular place to do so.

Twitter issues either a blue, gray, or gold tick to accounts to allow Twitter users to know which accounts are verified and official. While the blue tick is issued to the majority of verified Twitter accounts, the grey tick is for government officials and the gold tick is for major companies. This gold tick isn’t free though, it comes with the whopping price of $1,000 per month.Â
While the tick mark verification system is used to legitimize accounts and enhance the user experience, Twitter issued a gold tick verification to a FAKE Disney Junior account. The account has been suspended, but…how did this happen?

According to Deadline News, the fake account had the handle @DisneyJuniorUK and tweeted numerous profanities, including a racial slur, before the account was removed. Further, the account tweeted that South Park, an adult animation series would launch on Disney Junior in May.

It’s still unknown how the account, which has been on Twitter since June 2021, ended up with the gold tick, as it is reserved for official and verified business accounts — who pay the hefty aforementioned fee. The account holder said the gold tick “appeared out of nowhere.”

This follows site-wide confusion that occurred over the weekend when blue tick verification was removed briefly from numerous accounts before being reinstated shortly after.

Disney representatives in the UK became aware of the fake account this morning, April 24th, and brought it to Twitter’s attention. The account was then suspended by 11:30AM British Summer Time.
