Could a Muppets Murder Mystery Movie Be in the Works?! See What One Director Has to Say

Benoit Blanc is the new IT guy of fictional detectives. In the critically-acclaimed Knives Out the cigar-smoking dandy with the (slightly outrageous) Southern drawl stole the show, leading to the latest Blanc installment, Glass Onion.

Rian Johnson, the writer and director of both Blanc films, manages to balance the tension of a great mystery with comedic moments that bring much-needed levity (and some pretty iconic moments). But how would Benoit Blanc fare in an all-out comedy?

The internet loves to take well-known films and play “what if they created a Muppets version?”. The latest character that Muppet fans are begging to see is none other than Benoit Blanc! Netflix, where Glass Onion is streaming, interviewed Rian Johnson to see how the director feels about the potential crossover and whether Blanc might face off against Gonzo and the rest.

Johnson admitted he has been reading the internet’s tweets begging for a Blanc/Muppet film. He said, “it’s a joke that I thought was pretty brilliant, and I ended up really giving [it] some serious thought … As much as I take the murder mystery genre seriously, I take the genre of a Muppet movie seriously.”

Ultimately, Johnson believes that the Blanc murder mystery genre and Muppets genre are currently mutually exclusive. “I wouldn’t want to compromise either of them,” Johnson says. “And I feel like in order to make it well and make it work, you’d have to make a choice and compromise one or the other. If I ever make a Muppet movie, I just want to make a great Muppet movie.”

So Muppet fans, don’t give up hope yet! While we may not see Benoit interviewing Miss Piggy, maybe Rian Johnson will create his own Muppet murder mystery with all new characters. We’ll have to wait and see!
