If you’ve been trying to travel in the past year, you’ve likely run into quite a few obstacles.
Whether you’re traveling domestic or international, flying or driving, there have been many new safety measures put in place in response to the pandemic. Mask mandates and COVID-19 testing requirements have become common in the U.S. as well as other countries around the world. Policies have been especially strict in the U.K., and now officials are warning that residents may not get to vacation for the rest of 2021.
The U.K. transport minister, Grant Shapps, recently recommended that Brits avoid booking holidays for the remainder of this year, as they don’t know what the vaccination situation is going to be like in the future. He said, “Until we know the route out of lockdown, which we can’t know until we have more data, more information on vaccines as well, please don’t go ahead and book holidays”
CNN reported that Shapps said it was too early to know what health and safety measures would be in place by the summer. He recommended that travelers wait patiently until they know more. He also indicated that the U.K. government would be sharing more information on the subject towards the end of February.
It was also recently announced that U.K. residents who lie about traveling to places on the country’s “red list” may face penalties of up to 10 years in prison or a £10,000 ($13,800) fine. Starting today, U.K. residents traveling from countries on the “red list” (including South Africa, Portugal, the UAE, and most of South America) will be required to buy a “quarantine package” for £1,750 ($2,400,) that includes accommodation in a government-approved hotel, transport to the accommodation, and COVID-19 testing.
Currently, passengers arriving in the U.K. from countries not on the “red list” are required to present a negative test within 72 hours of their departure, isolate for 10 days, and take a COVID-19 test on the second and eighth day after their arrival.
