Gen Z Is Booking Silversea Before They’ve Ever Set Foot on a Carnival Ship — Here’s Why

Cruising is evolving rapidly these days, and Gen Z is redefining the entire cruise vacation experience.

For years, the cruising followed a pretty predictable experience path. You would start on a mainstream line like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, or Norwegian — and then maybe after a few sailings, you would graduate to premium brands like Celebrity or Princess. Then, after decades of cruising experience, you finally splurged on a luxury line like Silversea. But now? Gen Z is flipping the script.

Some younger travelers are heading straight for luxury brands like Silversea — sometimes before they’ve ever stepped foot on a Carnival ship.

In fact, there’s one viral Reddit post from a first-time cruiser who sailed both Virgin Voyages and Silversea during the same summer — and they laid out why Gen Zers and millennials might be skipping straight to the luxury cruises.

Pool Size Is Crucial

In their post, User Waitingtoembark wrote that “on a warm-weather cruise, pool size matters.” Both of their cruises were in the Mediterranean, and so swimming was a prime activity.

They found the Virgin ship to have pools that were too small. They wrote, “It was constantly packed with people just standing there because there was no space to swim.” By the time it emptied up a bit, “the water was murky,” and they felt miserable not being able to enjoy a pool during a heatwave.

The Silversea ship, on the other hand, had less than half the capacity and pools twice the size. “Loungers were plentiful, more spaced out, and had bar service. No queuing, no crowds, no hassle.”

Costs Are Deceiving

For this first-timer, their Virgin cruise cost twice as much. The “Virgin was more expensive than an all-inclusive, luxury cruise on Silversea.” For folks looking for a more stress-free experience, that can be bought for an upgrade like the Rockstar suite on Virgin, which gets you early boarding, access to a private rooftop area, and more.

However, Silversea’s basic veranda cabin offers a lot of the stress-free stuff without having to pay anything extra. Younger travelers are comparing the total vacation cost rather than the advertised fare. Once drinks, specialty dining, Wi-Fi, gratuities, and other extras are factored in, luxury cruise lines can look surprisingly competitive.

All-Inclusive Features Are A Game-Changer

While cruise lines of all price ranges offer different kinds of bundles, you might still find yourself checking out a bar tab or other independent expenditures.

However, Silversea can feel easier. “You just order a drink, and they hand it to you – no wristband tapping, giving your room number, or checking your account. Everything was easy.” Convenience is key. The less time spent thinking about charges and upgrades, the more time spent enjoying the vacation.

Young Sailors Need Their Space

For decades, cruise marketing assumed younger travelers wanted loud pool decks, packed nightclubs, DJs, and non-stop activities. These days? A growing number of younger travelers simply don’t.

While most cruise lines can feel crowded, with packed pools, galleys, and clubs, “Silversea never felt crowded, even in the dining venues and on the pool deck. There were also so many restaurants despite being a small ship, which helped spread people around e.g. at lunch, there were 5-6 venues open. It felt like there was so much space even at peak times.”

More available lounge chairs, less waiting, more restaurants, pools that aren’t shoulder-to-shoulder, and more. That’s exactly the type of luxury many younger travelers are prioritizing.

That sentiment is becoming increasingly common among younger travelers. Many Gen Z and millennial cruisers aren’t looking for a floating spring break. They’re looking for a floating luxury hotel.

Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and other mainstream lines aren’t going anywhere. They’re still fantastic options for millions of travelers. But younger cruisers are increasingly shopping differently. For a surprising number of young cruisers, Silversea is truly standing out.
