A rare scene unfolded at Disneyland recently, as guests were evacuated from the park’s Haunted Mansion in a way that made some waves on social media.

According to Disneyland officials, the iconic attraction was evacuated on May 27th after a “small electrical malfunction” on the track, leading to the rare — and somewhat surreal — instance of guests walking through the Mansion with the lights on.
Furthermore, the OC Register also reported that Disneyland officials stated, “Out of an abundance of caution, Haunted Mansion cast members gave verbal instructions and were deployed to assist guests during the evacuation procedure,” and “All guests were safely evacuated from the attraction, and no injuries were reported.”
The evacuation gained some viral notoriety when video from the incident was posted to the Disneyland SubReddit and later shared on Facebook.
In the clip, a Disneyland Cast Member can be heard announcing over the ride’s intercom, “We ask that you hop out of your buggy and find the nearest exit. If you can, there is a latch on the left-hand side that you can press down to open the clamshell,” amidst footage of guests leaving their vehicles on their own and maneuvering through the attraction’s graveyard. Tim McKenney, who shared the Facebook version of the video, wrote, “At first, the cast members advised people to remain seated and to wait to be escorted off the ride. After about 10 minutes, the message changed, stating that the cast members could no longer assist us.”
Many commenters were surprised at Disney’s approach to the evacuation, with a Reddit user writing, “I have never seen such chaos and recklessness on Disney’s end. What if someone falls or can’t get out? What if someone gets lost? What if kids were riding alone who were too scared to get off?” Another Reddit poster, who identified themselves as a former Cast Member, shared that this type of evacuation is usually reserved for serious emergencies.
