Did Sam Raimi Just Confirm He's Directing The Next Doctor Strange Film?

We’re still getting over how long we’ll have to wait to see Black Widow in theaters now that it’s been postponed from its original release date, but things are about to get…strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Of course, with all the movie releases that have been delayed, we’re starting to wonder what effect this will have on other MCU movies, like the next tale of Doctor Strange. However, it looks like we may have a hint at whose directing the movie — and it’s someone who is pretty familiar with superheroes.

In an interview with Coming Soon, Sam Raimi went on the record for the first time about filling the director’s chair for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness after it was announced that he would be returning for another Marvel property.

Raimi referenced an Easter egg from his much-loved Spider-Man 2 in which J. Jonah Jameson is trying to think of the perfect name for new villain Dr. Octopus and his assistant offers up Dr. Strange as a candidate, to which Jameson says the name has already been taken.

In the interview, Raimi said, “I loved Doctor Strange as a kid, but he was always after Spider-Man and Batman for me, he was probably at number five for me of great comic book characters. He was so original, but when we had that moment in Spider-Man 2 I had no idea that we would ever be making a Doctor Strange movie, so it was really funny to me that coincidentally that line was in the movie. I gotta say I wish we had the foresight to know that I was going to be involved in the project.”

While it’s not confirmation from Marvel, it has us pretty hopeful that Sam Raimi will, in fact, be re-joining the Marvel Universe in the director’s seat of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness!
