4 Rules Amazon Has for Returning Stuff (Most People Don’t Know #3)

Buying something online is easy. Returning it? That’s a different story.

Returning an item on Amazon can feel a bit intimidating — especially if you think you’ve already thrown away the box, opened the packaging, or have a while. Thankfully, Amazon has made returns surprisingly flexible. While there are always exceptions depending on the seller and the item, these four Amazon return rules should be known by all Amazon users.

1. Most Amazon Returns Have a 30-Day Window

The biggest rule to remember is Amazon’s standard 30-day return window. For the majority of items sold by Amazon, you’ll have about 30 days from delivery to start your return. There are exceptions like holiday purchases and certain categories like electronics, but if you’re unsure, assume 30 days is your deadline.

If something doesn’t look right, doesn’t work the way you expected, or simply isn’t what you wanted, it’s best to start the return process early in that 30-day window.

2. You May Not Need a Shipping Box or Even a Printed Label

This is one of Amazon’s most convenient features. Depending on the item and your selected return method, Amazon may let you drop off your return without packing it yourself. Many UPS, Kohl’s, Whole Foods, and Staples locations can handle the packaging and shipping for you. Sometimes you may need a label or box, though, so it’s best to check the requirements when selecting your return method.

But in many cases, all you need is the QR code generated in the Amazon app. The employee scans it, packages your item, adds the shipping label, and sends it on its way. That means you don’t necessarily have to save every Amazon box that shows up at your door.

3. Some Recalled Products Can Be Refunded Years Later

If an item you’ve purchased is later recalled for safety reasons, Amazon will notify you and will give you instructions on how to get your money back. In some situations, you won’t even need to send the product back.

Instead, Amazon or the manufacturer may ask you to destroy the recalled item and provide proof of destruction — such as a photo. Once you’ve completed those steps, you may qualify for a full refund — even if you bought the item years ago. This doesn’t apply to every product, but it’s worth paying attention to recall notices that arrive in your email or appear in your Amazon account.

4. Opening the Package Doesn’t Automatically Void Your Return

A lot of people assume that once they’ve opened a product, you’re stuck with it. That’s usually not the case. In fact, many returns require you to open the package first. How else would you discover that something arrived damaged, has missing pieces, doesn’t fit, or simply doesn’t work?

As long as the item still meets Amazon’s return requirements, you can often receive a partial or full refund after opening the original packaging. In many defect-related returns, customers receive all the money back upon item return.
