For more than 70 years, Disney Imagineering has been on the cutting edge of themed entertainment, consistently introducing new technologies and ride systems to the company’s theme parks. Over the years, the company has filed hundreds of patents for various technologies and presentations, some of which have transformed their parks forever, while others have never been implemented.

Now, Disney’s latest patent may reveal the next frontier in projection technology in the parks, maybe even in one of the new lands currently under construction at Walt Disney World.
The newly published patent — US 2026/0153748 A1– was first filed back in December 2024 and published June 4, 2026, describes a new approach to projection mapping effects.

The patent is specifically for a system that includes “a computing platform having a hardware processor and a system memory storing software code, as well as a projection unit controlled by the computing platform, the projection unit including a three-dimensional (3-D) extendable projection surface having an extending end and a non-extending end.” That’s essentially describing a projection surface that extends when needed and automatically retracts completely out of sight when not in use, with the entire process controlled automatically.
The patent further specifies that these effects could be triggered either by being synchronized to predetermined entertainment or by being responsive to an action by a person. Like say, reacting to the presence of a guest’s MagicBand+ entering a certain area, or passing a specific scene in an attraction

Potential illusions cited in the patent include:
- A tornado forming and dropping to the ground
- A tree limb or plant growing
- A character’s arm reaching out from within the surface
In terms of how this type of technology could be implemented in a Disney park, let’s think about the upcoming Villains Land. Imagine if you were walking in a certain area and unknowingly triggered a tornado effect sweeping through your location, a magical landscape transforming around you, or even a villainous character appearing seemingly out of nowhere and reaching towards you?

While we must stress that there is NO confirmation this newly patented technology will be included in Villains Land — or any other Disney projects — the potential applications for it are easy to imagine.

Disney’s latest patent, which was just publicly published this June after having been filed back in December of 2024, shows a new potentially game-changing approach to projection-mapping effects, though it remains to be seen if the technology will ever actually make it to Disney World. Stay tuned to AllEars for further coverage of Disney’s latest patents.
