BREAKING: Disney Announces NAME for New ‘Cars’ Area Coming to Magic Kingdom

Back in 2024, Disney revealed that a new Cars-themed area was in the works for Magic Kingdom. Between this and the Villains Land announcement, fans have been excited to hear more!

Coming Coming to Frontierland at Magic Kingdom, a new area themed to Pixar Animation Studios’ “Cars” will leave Radiator Springs and head to the wilderness with two new attractions including an off-road race.

If that sounds like you, it’s your lucky day because Disney just revealed new details for the Cars land, including its name!

What’s in a name? Well, actually, a lot! Disney doesn’t do anything without reason and meaning behind it. That’s why we were thrilled to dive into the name of the new Cars area — Piston Peak!

First of all, Disney Imagineers explained that the new area is heavily based on the National Parks, as expected for Frontierland, which is described as a land to celebrate American wilderness (in all its forms!). In particular, the Rocky Mountain National Park serves as the main inspiration for the team working on this at Disney.

From what Disney showed us, it looks like it will be a nice place to relax — yes, even though the Cars attractions here will feature off-roading! The art we saw showed lots of trees, waterfalls, and other water features. For anyone worried about the water going away with the closure of Rivers of America, there’s no need! The water features are going to add so much to this area of the park.

So now that we’ve talked a bit about the feel of the area, where did Disney get the name? Well, Piston Peak National Park is a fictional park that appears in the film Planes: Fire & Rescue. The animated version was a combination of Yosemite and Yellowstone, so the real space will look different with the Rocky Mountain influence.

Also, Disney has confirmed that they are not building anything we’ve seen before. No Radiator Springs like you can find at Disney California Adventure — this is completely original!

Disney is also pulling inspiration from existing buildings and attractions, including Wilderness Lodge and Grizzly Peak at Disney California Adventure. The two rides will each load in their own lodge — the Rally Race ride will load in the Visitor’s Lodge, and the family-friendly attraction will load in the Ranger Lodge.

The architecture will include several “car-ified” elements. That includes lower windows so that cars can see out of them, entrances and buildings that are big enough for cars to fit, and using found materials like old wagon wheels in the buildings. After all, this is supposed to be where these characters live!

Tom Sawyer Island, the Liberty Square Riverboat, and the Rivers of America will officially close on July 7th, 2025. July 6th is the last day to experience any of them. The construction walls are not set to go up immediately, but we’ll be keeping an eye on the park.
