Disney Adults Are Sounding the Alarm on the Magic Kingdom Expansion Plans

If there’s one thing Disney fans never run short on, it’s opinions—especially when it comes to the future of the parks.

Magic Kingdom

To that point, we thought we’d reach out to you and get your takes on the Magic Kingdom Expansion plans, and let’s just say, the Disney adults are activated.

We reached out to our followers on Facebook and Instagram to ask: “What worries you about the Magic Kingdom expansion plans?” We had quite a few people leave their opinions in the comments!

What do you think?

Now, let’s go over some of your top responses!

“I’m going to miss the aesthetic of the riverboat…”

First up is Tyler, who shared:

“I’m going to miss the aesthetic of the riverboat, I’m worried that ‘Cars’ won’t exactly blend with the Haunted Mansion.”

Liberty Square Riverboat

This was a common theme. The nostalgia. The atmosphere. The deep emotional attachment to specific corners of the park. And the big question: How do you preserve that when you’re going to lay down asphalt for Cars next door to the Haunted Mansion? It’s not just about adding a new ride. It’s about changing the vibe of an area that’s been a fixture for decades.

“They could get rid of Tomorrowland Speedway…”

Tina came in with a suggestion that had people nodding along:

“I wish Rivers of America was staying, they could get rid of Tomorrowland Speedway and turn that into a Cars themed attraction, repurpose Tom Sawyers island into something else like Pooh bear and friends Hundred Acre Wood with all their houses and a Woozle or 3.”

Tom Sawyer Island

Now this is the kind of blue-sky thinking we love. Tomorrowland Speedway is an obvious target—it’s loud, it smells like gas, and it’s low-key a relic. Cars attractions could fit there way better, and Tina’s Hundred Acre Wood idea? Adorable, themed, and totally on-brand for Magic Kingdom.

“Cars in Magic Kingdom is going to be such an eyesore…”

Emily didn’t sugarcoat it:

“Cars in Magic Kingdom is going to be such an eyesore compared to what’s there now.”

Tom Sawyer Island

That’s the aesthetic anxiety kicking in again. Magic Kingdom has a pretty cohesive design philosophy, and wedging in something like Cars—however well-executed it might be—feels off to some longtime fans. There’s a clear worry that newer additions are ignoring the park’s original visual language.

“Too much IP…”

Sharon came through with what might be the take of the thread:

“I think too much IP. We don’t need every ride linked to IP and if they insist then dig through the Disney archives! I’d love Robin Hood to get some recognition as my fave Disney film growing up.”

Robin Hood and Friar Tuck

We hear this one all the time. Not everything needs to be a tie-in. And if it is going to be IP-based, fans are begging Disney to look beyond the usual suspects. (Robin Hood-themed dark ride through Sherwood Forest with animatronic archery? Let’s go.)

“Too much asphalt!”

Sandy brought up a solid point about a Cars-themed land:

“Theming of Cars land at California Adventure is very well done, but is not a good fit for the chosen location at MK. Too much asphalt! Would be more appropriate in Tomorrowland or even better in HS.”

Cars Land in Disney California Adventure

Exactly. Cars Land in California Adventure works because of where and how it’s built. It’s part of that retro Route 66 vibe. But dropping it into Magic Kingdom without rethinking the materials, layout, or visual cohesion feels like a mismatch.

“It will no longer feel like Magic Kingdom…”

Heather kept it simple, but her comment hit home:

“I’m afraid it will no longer feel like Magic Kingdom.”

Magic Kingdom

This right here is the root of so many reactions. The fear that the park’s soul—the nostalgia, the history, the magic—might get paved over in the process of trying to modernize.

“Universal seems to be a lot better…”

Jonathan also had concerns, but more about the logistics than the theme:

“It worries me how long it will take. Universal seems to be a lot better at keeping projects moving while Disney falls behind.”

Epic Universe

He’s not wrong. Universal’s been building at lightning speed (ahem, Epic Universe), while Disney’s projects often stretch on for years. Fans are worried about long construction timelines that could disrupt experiences or result in half-finished areas.

“As long as they never change Carousel of Progress…”

Then there’s Amelia, who offered a rare optimistic take:

“Nothing. I’m very excited. As long as they never change Carousel of Progress or Tiki Room, they can do whatever they want with the rest of the park.”

Carousel of Progress

Love this energy. Change is inevitable, and for some fans, as long as the most sacred classics are left untouched, they’re all for fresh ideas.

Well, those were just some of your thoughts on what worries you about the Magic Kingdom expansion plans, and now we want to hear even more from you! In the meantime, stay tuned to AllEars for all the latest Disney news!

  1. Well I just dislike how long it takes disney to do anything like Universal freaking built a new park in the time it takes disney to refurbish a single ride. It’s ridiculous. I know they have the money so c’mon disney and get your crap together. For Pete’s sake ?

  2. I fully agree that putting Cars where the ferry boat was is a real mistake. Put it where the Speedway is!!!
Re-theme Tom Sawyers Island to something that fits in that area of the park.

  3. Disney already has abandon land, fix that mess. Florida is losing too much of our woods, natural habitat. I live here and don’t care much for the high prices to visit local attractions. No discount for those of us drivers & not excluding the truck drivers (the back bone for delivery) other deliveries putting up with those who can’t follow signs.
Disney can close the doors & I wouldn’t care. So I ask; why expansion? Why not just move to other states?

  4. I really hate this idea. I love Liberty Belle and the whole area, the vibe. Haunted Mansion overlooking the view of…Cars? ?
Being in a wheelchair, I love that I’m able to experience the boat, but – aside from the fact I have no interest – I’m sure the Cars ride won’t be accessible. I love the Villains addition, which is just that – an addition! If they must include Cars, I’m sure they can find someplace (like Speedway) they can put Cars if they must destroy another part of DW, and not add. There IS more land available, so not sure why that’s not explored as an option, creating MORE for guests to experience rather than taking attractions away.

  5. The Cars theme would be all wrong for that area of the Magic Kingdom! I love walking in Liberty Square and Frontierland by the water and seeing open, beautiful space. Covering that would be so wrong, especially with something that doesn’t even fit in the frontier.
