Following Frontier Airlines AND Delta Airlines, another major carrier has just announced it will be cutting flights in the second half of 2025. Here’s why you need to be prepared.

Southwest Airlines confirmed that it will reduce its capacity in the second half of the year as “more signs point to weaker domestic bookings this year,” according to CNBC. The airline is expecting “unit revenue to be flat to down as much as 4% in the second quarter from a year earlier.” Prepare for fewer Southwest Airlines flight options later in 2025.

Not only is the company making choices based on the current state of the economy and its unpredictability, but later this year, they will also begin charging for bags and will end their open seating model.

Southwest’s open seating policy has been in place for many decades, and the changes have been met with both praise and controversy.

Despite complaints regarding the upcoming changes, “Southwest posted a net loss of $149 million, an improvement from a loss of $231 million a year ago, and revenue of more than $6.4 billion, which was up 1.6% from a year ago.”
