NEWS: ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Downton Abbey’ Actress Dame Maggie Smith Dies at 89

It’s always heartbreaking when we hear about the loss of a celebrity we admire.

For many of us, we grew up with their films and characters, making the loss feel especially personal. Today, that feeling is all too real as we mourn the passing of Dame Maggie Smith, whose death has been confirmed.

According to the BBC, in a statement from her sons Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin, “It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September.” She was 89 years of age.

Dame Maggie Smith was an actress well known for her role as Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter films. Many of us grew up wishing we had a kind and wise mentor such as Professor McGonagall, a character made unforgettable thanks to Dame Maggie Smith, who brought her to life in a way that could only be described as magical.

Dame Maggie Smith also starred in the hit TV drama Downton Abbey and has won two Oscars throughout her career. She began her journey on stage, performing in acclaimed plays, and studied theatre at Oxford University.

A true legend, both on stage and on screen, Dame Maggie Smith’s talent was undeniable, and those who have worked with her have shared their praises and tributes. Keir Starmer,  Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, stated that Dame Maggie Smith  “was beloved by so many for her great talent, becoming a true national treasure whose work will be cherished for generations to come”.

Her legacy will live on for years to come, as generations can enjoy the roles that she carefully brought to life with her gift and love of her craft. She is an icon and, as her Downton Abbey co-star Hugh Bonneville has stated “a true legend” of the acting community.
