If you fly to and from Orlando, we’ve got some important news!

Orlando International Airport

The Orlando International Airport (MCO) is an incredibly busy place, constantly bustling with travelers taking their vacations to Disney World and Universal Orlando. We’re constantly seeing new flights added to the schedule and new airlines joining the long list of suppliers. But if you’re a devoted Southwest Airlines customer, we’ve got an important update.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that Southwest Airlines will soon be shifting the bulk of its business from Fort Lauderdale to Orlando with “plans to add six daily direct flights to the Caribbean and Central America starting in June.”

The routes require government approval, but would include Cancun, Grand Cayman, Nassau, Providenciales, Punta Cana, and San José, Costa Rica.“We’re shifting the bulk of the international service in Fort Lauderdale to Orlando,” said Chief Operating Officer Andrew Watterson.

“This will offer better connectivity in our domestic network via the nearly 140 daily departures at MCO. We are fully committed to delivering on a plan that enables operational excellence, improves operational efficiency.”

“Work on both sides of the equation … revenue and costs, it made more sense for our international anchor in the Southeast to be Orlando,” Watterson said. Southwest already operates with a crew based in Orlando, which is why it makes sense for the company to shift operations there.
