Ah, love is in the air already as Valentine’s Day nears.

You might be getting that bottle of bubbly ready or making plans to share a big plate of spaghetti with your significant other.

And we’re showing you our love by sharing the most romantic Disney movies to watch on the most heartfelt holiday of the year!

Animated Disney Films

Tangled

We have to be honest that Flynn and Rapunzel are up there on our list of the top Disney couples since they are just so sweet together. You might love Tangled for its humor or music, but the film is also incredibly beautiful for its message about relationships. Flynn and Rapunzel’s journey shows how two people can work together in order to help the other person achieve their dreams, even when the going gets tough.

The boat ride scene with all the floating lanterns also could easily be called the most romantic scene in Disney history. Flynn looks at Rapunzel with such adoration (we get emotional every time we see it), as Rapunzel decides to fully trust Flynn in that moment by offering him the Lost Princess crown.

And if you’re celebrating other kinds of love, shout out to Rapunzel’s parents for their undying tenderness — and for pulling Flynn into that family hug at the end!

The Princess and the Frog

If you don’t groove along to the songs in The Princess and the Frog, we’re pretty sure you’re not telling the truth. 😉 Despite all that voodoo hoodoo and the friends from the Other Side, the story of Tiana and Naveen is a wonderful example of how opposites attract. Both characters may come from different backgrounds, have opposing personalities, and want separate goals, but they are able to grow with one another over the course of the film.

As they experience a huge twist of events by each other’s side, they discover that their new goal actually involves being with one another. Naveen is willing to give up his dream of being with Tiana in order for her to achieve her goal of owning her own restaurant. But it’s no surprise that Tiana says her dream is actually to be with Naveen, too, even if it’s in frog form (we’re not crying, you’re crying).

Beauty and the Beast

We are all familiar with the saying “don’t judge a book by its cover,” but Beauty and the Beast takes it one step further. Belle and Beast are placed in a position where they must look past someone’s wrongdoings and accept them for all their flaws.

They show what unconditional love is like in its purest form, despite what others may have to say or think. Belle and the Beast choose to fight for one another, even if the townsfolk may not accept them. And relationships are about choosing each other every day, no matter what the circumstance may be.

Also big love to the friendships of all the personified household items in the film. Was there ever a bromance as compelling as that between Lumiere and Cogsworth?

Hercules

Sometimes a new love helps you open up and heal from past pain. Hercules may be new at this whole dating thing, but Meg has experienced extreme heartbreak (y’know, the one that caused her to practically be enslaved by Hades). Once Meg meets Hercules, though, he is able to help her heal from her past trust issues by showing her what true love is.

Meg even gives Hercules the chance to be human and seen for who he actually is, opposed to the “Wonderboy” persona he must put on as a demi-god. She sacrifices her life to help Hercules, showing that she would do anything for him. At the end of the film, Hercules reciprocates the feelings by giving up his opportunity to live on Mount Olympus in order to be with her.

WALL-E

True love doesn’t necessarily have to be between two humans. WALL-E follows the relationship of two lonely robots who realize they love being around one another. WALL-E takes care of EVE after she shuts down, holding her hand and keeping her safe from the bad weather on Earth.

Once EVE wakes up and pieces everything together, she is willing to give up everything she’s been programmed to know in order to be with WALL-E. They both give and take in healthy ways, and we STAN a wholesome relationship!

Live-Action Disney Films

The Parent Trap

Perhaps the most “realistic” out of this list, The Parent Trap follows two twins who have been separated by their parents’ divorce. There might be plenty of antics in how the twins achieve the rekindling of their parents’ romance, but Elizabeth and Nicholas are able to come back together once again after their relationship has fallen apart.

©Disney

The Parent Trap dives into the idea that you can love somebody, even after you have time apart from one another or encounter huge obstacles along the way. Couples can rediscover one another over the course of their relationship, maturing in their connection.

Plus, The Parent Trap talks about the familial love of the twins and their parents, as they are all brought back into each other’s lives.

High School Musical

We all remember the days of our high school romances, where everything felt so serious and so important. The High School Musical movie series gives us nostalgia thinking about the ups and downs of figuring out love for the first time.

©Disney

It’s a major throwback to your days as a teenager with relatable moments, not to mention the romantic songs you can belt out with your significant other. And, we’re sure you know the lyrics to all the songs you grew up listening to from High School Musical!

Cinderella

This might be a hot take, but live-action Cinderella is just so much more romantic than the animated version. If not for anything else, that ballroom scene as Prince Kit and Ella dance with one another still has us swooning every time. BUT the whole story is lovely as you actually get to watch the Prince and Ella fall in love with one another.

Kit attempts to pursue and court Ella after meeting her on a horseback ride and then dancing with her at his ball. Their relationship is pure and heartfelt, filled with the kindness that Ella promised her late mother she would continue to show everyone.

The Princess Diaries

If there is a Disney series I could watch over and over again, The Princess Diaries would be it. The first movie shows a high school romance with the adorable “I’m Sorry” M&M pizza and foot popping kiss at the end between Michael and Mia in front of that GORGEOUS fountain.

But the sequel jumps ahead a few years to when Mia is 21 and set to rule as Queen of Genovia. Despite the situation of trying to seek out a husband that would serve as a respectable king by her side, Mia and Nicholas fall for one another. Their relationship develops from dislike into love, as Nicholas finally chooses to give up any right he has to the throne to support Mia’s decision to rule as Queen on her own.

©Disney

The Princess Diaries 2 leaves their relationship open-ended, though, to show how romantic a slow burn can be between two people as they decide not to rush into anything.

We also think it’s important to note that the relationship between Joe and Queen Clarisse is just as moving, too, as they have fallen in love over the years and finally get married when they are older (OTP forever).

Never Been Kissed

If you’re a sucker for great romantic literature, you’ll be thrilled to know that Never Been Kissed connects its love interests together over their knowledge of books and plays. As Sam and Josie fall for one another in an unconventional way, the film touches on the idea that everyone deserves love, no matter where you come from, who you happened to be in the past, and who you are now.

©Disney

And we have to be real that we will NEVER get over that ending sequence where the camera spins around Sam and Josie kissing in time with the Beach Boys’ “Don’t Worry Baby.”

10 Things I Hate About You

Speaking of literature, did you know that 10 Things I Hate About You is actually based on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew? The adapted film version updates the story with a more modern lens to give more agency to its female characters in their lives and relationships. And this makes the romance between Kat and Patrick all the more fulfilling because there’s depth to each of their past experiences.

©Disney

They have to figure out how to navigate their separate situations together. Despite their relationship being rocky (which is relatable to many couples), the ending is much more romantic when they do finally overcome their differences to end up together. Plus, Patrick buys Kat a guitar, which gives him major brownie points in our book.
