Last year, Walt Disney World set up a “bubble” for the NBA to complete their 2019-2020 season. Teams stayed in resorts around Disney and played all their games at ESPN Wide World of Sports.
Due to the success they had with hosting the sporting league, they’re doing it again soon for the NBA G League! And, Florida officials believe that they could have success implementing this format for the 2021 Olympics, according to a recent press release.
In the press release, Chief Financial Officer for the State of Florida, Jimmy Patronis wrote to the International Olympic Committee in an effort to relocate the 2021 Olympics from Tokyo to Florida. In his letter, he cites the success of the NBA bubble and operations at Walt Disney World. He believes that “Disney serves as an incredible model for how to run a complex organization in the midst of COVID-19.”
The letter was prompted by recent media reports that suggest leaders in Japan have “‘privately’ concluded that they are too concerned about the pandemic for the 2021 Olympics to take place.”
