Well, you know what they say — when one (flight) door closes, another one opens.

And in this case, we mean that when one airline files for bankruptcy, another one sees the opportunity to pick up some additional flight routes. Spirit Airlines filed for Title 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in a year (the first time was in November 2024), and now, another airline has added FIFTEEN new flights to Orlando.
According to the Orlando Business Journal, United Airlines is adding 15 new flights to Orlando to its winter schedule, citing Spirit’s bankruptcy as the reason. Three of the new flights will be round-trip flights from Orlando Airport to Houston, Chicago, and Newark, respectively, which will begin January 6th, 2026.

According to The Orlando Business Journal, Spirit is the second busiest carrier at Orlando International Airport, so if the airline were to go out of business, it would leave a large gap in available (and affordable) flights to Orlando. In its bankruptcy letter, Spirit stated it would be “reducing its presence in certain markets, shrinking its fleet and putting an emphasis on key markets.” In response to this, United Airlines will now offer 45 daily flights into Orlando from various locations.

United Airlines is currently the seventh-largest airline at Orlando Airport, but they are working on a $315 million, 354,400-square-foot maintenance campus that will open in 2027. We’re curious to see how things may change depending on how Spirit’s bankruptcy filing affects its flights.
