Disney+ Begins Enforcing Stricter Rules On Password Sharing

If you’ve been keeping up with Walt Disney Company news, then you’ve probably heard about Disney’s shift in focus to streaming and bettering their streaming platforms.

At the quarterly earnings calls throughout 2023, Disney CEO Bob Iger has shared the company’s desire to increase revenue while bettering their streaming and TV platforms. While Disney has voiced interest in selling linear network assets like ABC, the company has partnered with PENN Entertainment to create ESPN BETand explore the world of sports betting, and now, Disney is creating ways to increase revenue with Disney+.

Disney shared at the Q3 earnings call that soon, changes would be made that address password and account sharing. Now, we’re seeing those changes being made.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Canadian Disney+ subscribers received emails stating that new account sharing rules would be implemented beginning November 1st.

The email read, “Unless otherwise permitted by your service tier, you may not share your subscription outside of your household… We may, in our sole discretion, analyze the use of your account to determine compliance with this agreement. If we determine that you have violated this agreement, we may limit or terminate access to the service and/or take any other steps as permitted by this agreement.”

As far as Disney+ subscribers within the United States, Iger stated that Disney+ would restrict account sharing with a price increase for ad-free tiers of the streaming platform.
