It’s already stressful if you’re flying during the holidays, but this year has been particularly chaotic thanks to bad weather, among other issues.

Southwest Airlines, in particular, has struggled the most, and as a result, the airline is continuing to cancel more flights, leaving many passengers stranded.
Southwest canceled over 60% of its flights on December 26th and then continued to cancel 63%Â of its flights the following day. According to CNBC, the airline is still canceling flights, with 2,500 canceled on December 28th.

Although bad weather was to blame for flight cancellations over the weekend, other airlines have since started to bounce back, but Southwest continues to have so many problems that the U.S. Department of Transportation has said it will be looking into the “unacceptable rate of cancellations and delays.”

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg previously urged airlines to consider capping fares for cities affected by these cancellations. Since then, Delta, American, and United have stated they will do so in select cities.

Meanwhile, Southwest has said it will compensate passengers affected by its cancellations for “reasonable” expenses if they bring receipts. So if you are affected by these flight cancellations, be sure to keep all receipts for any additional lodging, transportation, and food you’ve needed.
