Although it may not seem like it, flying is still one of the safest ways to travel.

That’s not to say that there aren’t incidents occasionally, including weather-related incidents, extreme turbulence, and other issues. However, an investigation is now underway after two planes nearly collided at an airport in France, according to The Independent.

The incident in question happened in Nice, France, when two aircraft came very close to each other on a runway during a “serious incident.” The two aircraft involved were Nouvelair flight BJ586, inbound from Tunis, and easyJet flight U24706, which approached the wrong runway by mistake at the airport. The Nouvelair flight passed just 50 feet above the easyJet aircraft before turning around.

The aircraft landed safely on a different runway about 15 minutes later, while the easyJet plane taxied back to the gate, and its flight was canceled. No injuries were reported during the near-miss. The French Bureau d’Enquetes et d’Analyses, or Office of Investigation and Analysis, has launched an investigation into how the incident happened. However, there were thunderstorms in the vicinity during the time of the incident.

The Nice Côte d’Azur airport has two parallel runways that are close, which could have also contributed to what led to the near-accident.

In a statement, easyJet said, “The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is easyJet’s highest priority, and in line with procedures, we are fully cooperating with the safety investigation that has been launched in order to understand what happened.”
