It has been quite the week for Southwest Airlines!

Southwest already announced it would be making changes to its open seat policy this year. Then, they announced they would be getting rid of their “two free checked bags” policy — much to the dismay of travelers across the United States.

It’s no secret that Southwest’s two-free checked bags policy was not only a great perk but also gave them a competitive advantage over other airlines that charge for bags. But, Starting on May 28th, 2025, your bags are going to cost you extra at Southwest. At the time of writing, that’s just a little over two months away, which will be here more quickly than you think.

If you are A-List Preferred with Southwest, you will still get two checked bags for free, whereas A-List gets you one checked bag for free. Rapid Rewards Credit Card holders will get one checked bag for free for every ticket purchased. As for everyone else, you’ll need to pay for those checked bags…sorry.

Are we going to have to cut the amount we pack in half? What about those extra Mickey ears? Our specific outfits for our EPCOT days vs our Magic Kingdom days?

If you fly Southwest because of the free checked bags, you might need to make some sacrifices when it comes to packing for your next trip. It’s going to be hard to choose what to leave behind, but we believe in you. All you need is a little faith, trust, and pixie dust…okay, maybe that won’t solve this issue.
