When is Goofy’s Birthday?

For nearly 92 years, Goofy has been one of the Walt Disney Company’s most endearing characters, despite fans unsure what kind of animal he is. No, folks, he is not a cow.

Part of the fab five of Disney characters – Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy,  and Pluto – he was teamed up in early film shorts with Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. His comedic antics are truly classic!

Before we get into Goofy specifically, a bit of history on the Walt Disney company celebrating the “birthdays” of their iconic characters.

Like many elements of the company, it all started with the mouse. Specifically, during the 1930s Disney would celebrate Mickey Mouse’s “birthday” on various different autumn days throughout the decade. This “birthday” would be accompanied by a promotional campaign, including new bookings for Mickey shorts in theaters and other activities. 

Decades later, famed Disney archivist Dave Smith deemed Mickey’s official “birthday” to be November 18, 1928, the day that Steamboat Willie first premiered in New York City. The company still celebrates Mickey’s “birthday” as November 18th to this day. 

So, when is Goofy’s Birthday? Well, this DOG debuted on May 25, 1932 in the animated short, Mickey’s Revue.

We know he’s a dog because he appeared in newspaper comic strips as “Dippy Dawg.”

In 1939 with the release of “Goofy and Wilbur”, this silly character’s name was changed to the relatable Goofy. His zany escapades were shown in many sports-related films where Goofy’s clumsiness inspired endless laughs for viewers.
