UPDATE: Netflix has launched its “crackdown on illicit password sharing” in the U.S., according to Variety. Netflix now warns users that their accounts are only for them and the people who they live with in their household. To share Netflix with someone outside of your household, you can transfer a profile to a new membership (that someone else pays for) or you can buy an extra member for $7.99 per month.
Sharing is caring, right? Well, when it comes to password sharing, some of our favorite streaming services may disagree. You may remember that back in October, Netflix floated a password-crackdown plan to its shareholders, and the plan was not well-received.

Now that some time has passed, has Netflix changed its mind? Let’s talk about it!
According to a CNBC report, Netflix plans to push back its password-sharing crackdown. During the company’s most recent earnings release, Netflix revealed that the new password-sharing rules will start in the second quarter.

Keep in mind that the previous plan was to begin the password-sharing crackdown late in the first quarter. Per CNBC, Netflix stated, “While this means that some of the expected membership growth and revenue benefit will fall in Q3 rather than Q2, we believe this will result in a better outcome from both our members and our business.”

When the new plan goes into effect, Netflix subscribers will pay an additional fee for sharing passwords with people outside of their households. CNBC reported that Netflix claims 43% of its global user base, or more than 100 million households, currently share accounts.

For now, it seems like Netflix users have a little extra time to share their accounts with friends and family. Netflix hasn’t shared the exact date that the rollout will take place, but we’ll be sure to keep our eyes out for more updates.
